BOERNE — Boerne Community Theatre welcomes audiences to a new production of Neil Simon’s “London Suite,” bringing the classic play from page to stage to please and delight a new generation of theatergoers.
Co-directed by Martin Vidal and Allen Rudolph, the show opened Aug. 30 and runs through Sept. 15 at the theater, 907 E. Blanco Road. Friday and Saturday shows start at 8 p.m. and Sunday matinee performances are set for 2:30 p.m. A Thursday Sept. 5 performance will go on at 7:30 p.m.
The cast includes a mix of veteran and newer actors, featuring Steve Harris as Brian, Robert Moritz as Billy, Talitha Muehlbrad as Lauren, Kelli Grant as Mother, Jessica Mewborne as Grace, Keisha McFerrin as Diana, Allen Rudolph as Sidney, David Clingan as Mark, Kimberly Stoner as Annie, Cori Smelker as Sitgood, Andrew Stoner as Bellman and Sarah Coyle as McMerlin.
Production assistant Robin Cunningham, who also serves as head of audience development on BCT’s board of governors, said the show is a rich tapestry of stories, telling the tale of four groups of people staying at the same upscale hotel.
They include a Welsh novelist very upset with his manager, an American widow spending time with her loving daughter, an American couple looking for their missing Wimbledon tickets, and a long-awaited reunion between Sidney and Diana (who also appear in Simon’s “California Suite”).
“There are plenty of twists and turns in this piece by the acclaimed playwright Neil Simon,” Cunningham said. “Audiences won’t want to miss this one.”
Actor Robert Moritz said: “It’s been a pleasure portraying one of Simon’s ‘London Suite’ characters.
“I have the chance to brush off my British accent and play a sniveling unscrupulous manager, a real pleasure,” Moritz said.
Simon has a way with words, added Moritz, and his works remain evergreen.
“It’s challenging to learn his dialogue, but it’s deliciously fun to listen to it,” Moritz said. “BCT puts on many wonderful plays, but it’s nice to be in a recognizable commodity like this one.”
Another local actor in the production, Steve Harris, who plays opposite Moritz in one of the show’s iconic scenes, said the play will fascinate audiences because each scene tells a completely different story.
“All of them have very real human emotions on display,” Harris said. “These are emotions everyone can connect with: fear, love, hysteria and hope — all on display in their full glory, from subtle nuance to throat-gripping intensity.”
