Lady Chargers shut down Liberty Hill, 2-0

Toyota Rattler Stadium in San Marcos has been very good to the Champion girls soccer team this year.

Toyota Rattler Stadium in San Marcos has been very good to the Champion girls soccer team this year.

After winning a first-round playoff match there against a very good Georgetown team, the Lady Chargers returned to the stadium on Friday for a third-round match against another solid team in Liberty Hill – and won again.

In both matches, Champion didn’t give up a goal and won there on Friday, 2-0, after beating Georgetown, 1-0.

Champion improves to 18-3-3 overall and advances to the regional tournament this weekend in Corpus Christi starting Friday.

The Lady Chargers face McAllen Friday at 4:30 p.m. at Cabaniss Field.

Statistically, Liberty Hill played the Chargers well and won some statistical categories except the one that matters most, the scoreboard.

The Lady Panthers had more shots on goal, 9-5, outshot the Chargers, 12-10, and took more corners than Champion, 4-3, but didn’t have anything to show for it.

Mack Arendall scored both Champion goals in Friday’s match, one in each half. Arendall took a feed from Vivian Garza and knocked it in midway through the first half.

Early in the second half, Arendall converted again to make it 2-0 and that’s where it stayed.

Audrey Riordan was in goal and came up with 9 saves for the Lady Chargers team that still hasn’t given up a goal in the playoffs and has won all three matches by a combined score of 13-0.
