The Champion baseball team had to go extra innings against Buda Johnson last Friday but the Chargers prevailed over the Jaguars, 4-2, in 10 innings.
With Friday’s win, Champion closes out the first round of district play at 5-3. They are 12-6 overall and kick off the second round of 26-5A action Tuesday at New Braunfels Canyon.
Over the weekend, the Chargers also played a non-district contest and defeated Canyon Lake, 5-3.
Vs. Buda Johnson
Johnson took the early lead with single runs in the first and second for the quick 2-0 advantage, but the Chargers answered with a run in the third and another in the fifth to tie it up at 2-2.
It stayed that way until the 10th when Champion scored 2 runs in the top of the inning.
With one out in the 10th, the Chargers loaded the bases with a hit batter and two singles. From there Connor Holtorf walked to bring in the runner from third and make it 3-2.
After the Jags recorded the next out, Quinn Grable took a walk to push in another run for 4-2 lead.
Charger pitcher Aaron Basham retired the side in the bottom half of the frame with two Ks and a pop up to left.
Basham picked up the win and threw 4.1 innings. He gave up 2 hits, no runs or walks and fanned 8.
Karson Kaiser started and threw for 5.2 innings and tossed 98 pitches. Kaiser yielded 4 hits, 2 runs but only 1 was earned, struck out 6 and walked 4.
Ryan Brandon had a good game at the plate and had 4 of the team’s 8 hits after he knocked out a double and 3 singles. Basham and Quinn Grable both singled and Jacob Gresham doubled.
Aiden Pickett, Andrew Frei, Brandon and Gresham all scored once.
Vs. Canyon Lake
The Chargers scored 3 in the first against the Hawks and never trailed from there. They added 2 more in the fifth and won despite getting outhit, 8-5.
Josh Bowman and Robbie Vela both tripled with Bowman picking up 2 RBI and Vela driving in a run.
Jordan Ballin walked and scored; Quinn Grable singled and scored; Ryan Brandon singled, scored and pushed in a run and Connor Holtorf walked twice, singled and scored a run.
Jacob Gresham went 4 innings on the hill and picked up the win. He gave up 7 hits, 1 earned run, sat down 3 and walked 1.
Holtorf threw 3 frames and yielded a hit and a run, fanned 1 and walked 2.
