National Library Week started April 3 and will end on April 9. This week, we encourage all community members to visit the library in person or online to explore and access services and programs.
Did you know we offers a wide array of programs, classes and resources that are available in person or from the comfort of home? This is a time to highlight the essential role libraries, librarians and library workers play in transforming lives and strengthening communities.
The theme for this year’s National Library Week is “Connect with Your Library,” which promotes the idea that libraries are places to get connected to technology by using broadband, computers and other resources, but more importantly, libraries also connect communities to each other.
Tax appointments full
Our popular free tax service is booked, and we can’t take any more appointments. We regret that we can’t help everyone, but this program is run strictly by AARP volunteers and they only have so many hours each week they can devote to this.
The folks with the IRS’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) service is another option. You can contact them by calling 210-207-2817.
BISD art is back
We are so excited to welcome the Boerne Independent School District to display its students’ magnificent art. When you visit the library during the month of April you will get an eyeful of beautiful masterpieces created by students from all grades in the school district.
Be sure to bring friends and family to show off your own artist’s work. The entire library will be covered in drawings, paintings, sculptures and more, so everywhere you turn, you’ll discover another wonderful surprise!
Get Fit Boerne kicks off
We love getting back to normal again after a two-year hiatus! The library is partnering with the Parks and Recreation Department, along with various other organizations, to bring health and wellness programs to the public in our campaign, “Get Fit Boerne.”
On Wednesday, April 6 at noon, in the amphitheater behind the library, we’re offering a free Zumba class to adults and teens. Instructor Katie Meuth welcomes novices and Zumba enthusiasts alike. Join us for a spicy class full of fun, energetic music! No registration is required.
Join our bridge party
It’s the library’s 70th anniversary of serving the community and visitors to the area, and we’re celebrating by fondly recalling the 1950s. So far we’ve offered 50s trivia and dance tunes, a teen party and a ‘50s food demonstration featuring amazing dishes.
On Wednesday, April 6, from 6 to 8 p.m., we are hosting a fabulous bridge party! Whether you are a beginner or an expert bridge player we invite you to come to this delightful program featuring instruction, card playing and delicious refreshments. Phyllis Monical is our instructor. Please register by visiting our website at boernelibrary.org.
Getting ready for college
You may not realize, but the library is a valuable resource for planning your educational future. Visit our website at www.boernelibrary.org, then just hover over the “Online Library” tab, and then choose “College Preparation.” It’s a comprehensive guide to help you make smart decisions about where you should attend, what programs of study to focus on, and admission requirements at different schools. This is just one of the many online guides we offer, so please check out the others as well.
Weird things to check out
As you may have heard, we now check out cake pans to the public! How cool is that?
You have about 30 to choose from. They’re located on the second floor in the cookbook section.
In the Youth Department, we offer musical instruments for youngsters exploring their own talents and passions. You can check out anything from bongos to a harp.
Additionally, we recently added memory kits filled with music and other nostalgia to spark conversations between senior citizens and their families or caregivers. Just ask for these items at the front desk.
Amnesty program
Spring is in the air, the flowers are blooming and the butterflies are fluttering by. The library staff feels so grateful for this wonderful time, but the one thing we’re missing is you!
If you have felt uncomfortable coming back to the library because you have long overdue books, please be assured that we want you to start using our resources again. Just come on in, return your items, and we’ll put you back in good standing! It’ll be like it never happened!
We know you’re good eggs, so hop on down to the library today. We’ll welcome you with open arms!
Welcome, Kristen
We’re thrilled to welcome Kristen Farmer to the library family. She started working here recently as a part-time library associate. A graduate of Champion High School, Kristen went on to get her BA in history from UTSA. She’s now interested in becoming a librarian!
Kristen says she’s happy to chat with patrons about arts and crafts, as well as herb gardening. Please be sure to stop by and say hi.
