I first fell in love with the Boerne Independent School District some 20 years ago when I accepted a position at Boerne Middle School North by submitting a handwritten, paper application. My how times have changed!
By change, I am mainly implying technological advances and substantial population increases. The basic core values and interpersonal workings of BISD have remained steadfast and consistent. We have always had top of the line teachers and administrators who put students first while holding onto what works and adapting to what no longer does.
Currently, I substitute for BISD, volunteer through PTO leadership roles and serve as a member of the For Boerne School PAC. I am thrilled to participate in educating the community on the upcoming school bond election, and the awesome thing about my perspective is that I have been on both sides of the classroom – once as a full-time teacher/ coach/sponsor and now as a full time parent of three Greyhounds.
It is with this perspective that I went into the Long-Range Steering Committee (LRSC) early this fall and aided in putting together a list of the most highly prioritized needs for the immediate future of BISD in the areas of growth, safety and technology. This process was very strategic, educational and ultimately successful. Over 80 members of our community were invited to participate.
With ample campus tours, expert guest speakers, growth analyses predictions and committee consensus, a proposal was delivered to the BISD board of trustees. As you may have already heard, the bond recommendation package was approved unanimously by the board to move forward to the polls.
I will continue to support this initiative by serving on the For Boerne School PAC team and assisting with early voting. Personally, I urge you to vote! Vote early! Early voting begins on April 25 and runs through May 3, with Election Day on May 7.
Whether you have kids in the district or not, please do not think your vote doesn’t matter. Your school tax rate will not increase, and every single campus in BISD will be impacted, adapted, upgraded and/or expanded all while making things a little better for students and staff. If you are 65-plus, your school taxes in BISD are frozen!
Again, having been on both sides of the walls, these possibilities are more than exciting! A lot has occurred between my paper application for middle school and present day, continuing needs for Chromebooks and Smart Boards.
You will see two propositions at the polls. That is to ensure technology receives its proper, separate attention for upgrades, replacements and ample quantities. Please vote yes to both 1 and 2. While BISD does not cause all of the Boerne area growth, it is my passion to help ensure our future generations impacted by growth keep their high-quality education and facilities.
Grateful to be a Greyhound,
–Kristi Schmidt, Boerne
