Boerne ISD: AP testing, enrollment soared in’24

BOERNE — The Boerne Independent School District saw an increase at all levels with Advanced Placement testing categories from 2023 to 2024, including the number of students enrolled in AP courses, number of AP exams taken and an increase in students who scored a 3 or higher.

BISD had more students enrolled in AP courses than in years past, according to Bryan Benway, district director of communications.

The highest improvement seen was a 28.6% increase in the number of AP exams taken. A total of 3,023 exams were taken in 2024, compared to 2,351 in 2023. This is also a total increase of 1,820 exams as compared to tests taken in the 2020 school year.

“These impressive increases in both participation and performance reflect BISD’s unwavering commitment to preparing our students for future success,” Larissa Flores, BISD chief instructional officer, said.

“Our focus on fostering college, career and military readiness is not just a goal, but a daily effort to ensure that every student has the opportunity to excel,” Flores said.

The College Board, the organization that runs the AP program, considers a score of a 3 or higher on an AP exam as “passing.” A score of 3 or higher is also accepted by most colleges as earned college credit.

From 2023 to 2024, BISD increased the number of students who earned a 3 or higher by 16.2%. Not only did more students take more exams, but the average, or mean, score of all BISD students increased from an average of 2.99 in 2023 to 3.07 in 2024.

Advanced Placement testing is one way students can demonstrate college, career and/or military readiness upon graduation.

BISD offers over 33 courses in all core subject areas as Advanced Placement.
