Rain, rain, DON’T go away

Monday deluge could be start of long-awaited rainy period for drought-ravaged Kendall County

When it rains, it pours ... finally.

Breaking what seemed to be an impenetrable precipitation bubble around Boerne and Kendall County, Monday’s heavy downpour brought some welcome relief to a thirsty sector of the Hill Country.

Rainfall ranging from 1.36 inches at the Cibolo Nature Center to 3.59 inches at Guadalupe River State Park was recorded in a short timeframe Monday, according to Milan Michalec, Cow Creek Groundwater Conservation District board president.

“I look for totals that feed in the Guadalupe River Basin above Canyon Reservoir,” Michalec said Tuesday. “TexMesonet report showed three stations reported up to 4.91 inches over the past 72 hours.”

TexMesonet is a statewide earth observation data collection network developed and utilized by the Texas Water Development Board.

The Cibolo Nature Center reported 1.36 inches over the previous 72 hours, he said, prior to the arrival of Tuesday’s cloudburst.

Jack Estes, a resident of the River Mountain Ranch subdivision north of Cordillera Ranch, recorded 2.65 inches of rain in an hour’s time Monday evening.

“That’s a record in the 11 years we’ve lived here,” Estes said. “And it looks like we could get some more. Rain usually goes around us.”

His gauge topped out with 2.98 total inches for Monday while reporting another 1.22 inches during Tuesday morning’s initial rains. He said he’s received 5.13 inches for the month, by far the wettest month of the year in the region.

The city of Boerne officially recorded 1.65 inches Monday at Boerne Lake and between 1.051.15 inches in Tuesday morning’s rains.

Monday figures from the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow Network showed stations in Fair Oaks Ranch recording between 1.53 and 3.68 inches, two of four Kendalia stations reporting 3.55 and 3.9 inches, and several Boerne stations recording as much as 4.68, 5.01 and even 5.82 inches at one northeast Boerne station, while several registered closer to 1 and 1.3 inches.

A 10- day extended weather forecast for Boerne includes chances of rain topping 43% Wednesday, 34% Thursday, 56% Friday, 68% Saturday and 75% Sunday.
