Free Fuel: Boerne church hosts July 13 free gas giveaway

In today's economy, “free” is a word you don't hear often. With escalating prices on everyday essentials, City Hills Church of Boerne is on a mission to provide the community with a vital necessity, for free.

Gasoline.

City Hills Church is hosting a “free gas giveaway” on Saturday, July 13, partnering with Halftime Exxon at Longhorn Cafe, 369 S. Esser Road. The event is slated to run 9:30-11:30 a.m. or until funds are exhausted.

Each person in attendance will receive about $25 worth of gas. No pre-registration or appointment is required.

Julie Valdes, the church's next-step director, said church members will speak with attendees, realizing everyone’s situation is different, and provide them with the necessary funds.

“People are going through inflation and hard times,” Valdes said. “When we did this a few years back, we met someone that talked about how they were going to a job interview and they didn't have enough money to get there, so it was a blessing to be able to fill their car with gas and have the ability to pray for them.” “That was why we wanted to do the event again and serve our community in that way,” the next-step director said.

In its first effort in 2022, the church drew between 180 to 200 guests for the free gas offer, for whatever their need: school, work, doctor’s appointments, even job interviews.

'Some people are having to choose between groceries and gas, and that's a decision that's unimaginable,” said Mitch Rose, City Hills Church lead pastor. “We hope to bring a hint of hope in a tough season for many in our community.”

City Hills Church has been a part of the Boerne community for more than seven years. The congregation is home to hundreds of families in the Boerne area.

Every year in July, the church hosts what it calls “serve day.” This initiative is in collaboration with churches across the world.

The day is designed to encourage church members to serve their community in practical ways while “sharing the love of Christ with no strings attached,” the church website states.

This year the church will be hosting and volunteering at different places in the Boerne area, including the Boys and Girls Club of Comfort, to help repair and refresh walkway; Hill Country Pregnancy Care Center, for landscaping and cleaning; and an Adopt-ACountry Road cleanup.

“We actually have six different projects we are doing at the same time,” Valdes said. “We’re doing stuff at the pregnancy care center and some stuff in Comfort, so it’s a great way to give back.”
