The Patrick Heath Public Library staff and its patrons have had a blast this summer with our programming based on an adventure theme.
Our program attendance has been through the roof, and we are making new library cards all day long. It’s not too late to join in on the fun and participate.
Very few of our events require registration, so just check out our calendar to discover wonderful ways to have fun this summer. The special programming ends in the last week of July.
Armchair adventures
Armchair Adventures is perfect for people who want to discover others’ adventures in a variety of ways.
At 10 a.m. Wednesday, author Denise Richter will discuss her recent book, “San Antonio’s Passport to Fun.” Richter is a certified professional tour guide who will share all the fun things people can do in the big city just 30 miles south of us.
Our next Armchair event takes place at 10 a.m. July 17 featuring longtime Boerne residents Mike and Laurie Hampton. Come out and learn more about their adventures in beekeeping.
Both events are free and open to the public.
Teen, adult reading challenge
This summer, we tried something new, and it’s been a resounding success.
We always ask our youngest patrons to log their reading, but it dawned on us that humans enjoy lifelong learning. Thus, we created a special reading challenge for teens and adults.
Instead of just logging how many hours or pages you’ve read, we’re asking you to try different genres and activities. All you have to do is pick up a reading- challenge passport and start earning your stickers. You’ll then be eligible to win fun prizes. You have until the last week in July to participate.
Killer crafts continues
Our monthly crime-podcast program, during which attendees listen and work on their own crafts, continues an adventure-themed murder show.
Join us at 6 p.m. Wednesday to hear the second and final part of the Gabby Petito case. Killer Crafts takes place each month on the second Wednesday. We assure you that this is a fascinating program that promotes some spirited discussions amongst the participants.
Live! at the library
The Jesse Stratton Band will perform from 7-9 p.m. July 18 during Live at the Library at the amphitheater. The band is known for playing its own brand of alternative country and Americana.
Be sure to bring blankets or chairs, along with a picnic supper. This concert is part of our free, monthly “Live! at the Library” music series.
Coffee with a counselor
The library is also partnering with Hill Country Family Services (HCFS) to provide space for free counseling on Wednesdays during July, from 9 a.m. to noon.
This is a collaboration with HCFS Behavioral Health and two practicum students from Texas A&MSan Antonio.
The library has partnered with HCFS for several years on social needs in our community, including providing warming and cooling stations when deemed necessary by emergency management and providing space for counseling for neighbors who may need someone to talk to.
For details or to register for the free counseling sessions, contact HCFS at 830-249-8643 or visit boernelibrary. We are committed to working with HCFS for many years to come, because we are so grateful for all they do for the community.
The best bookshop
The Friends of the Boerne Public Library operate the most charming used bookshop in the Hill Country.
The volunteers who run the Bookshop Under the Windmill always take care to sell only quality materials that include books for all ages, as well as movies, magazines, puzzles and more. They are open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday.
The public can donate gently used items by dropping them off at the library during business hours.
