Comfort events begin July 3 with ‘Comfort Cannon Caper’
Comfort and Fair Oaks Ranch residents are eager for the start of the annual Fourth of July celebrations just hours away.
Comfort’s Independence Day celebration begins today, July 3, with events centered around the recreation of a historic event.
At 5:15 p.m. today, the Comfort Little Theatre will present the main event known as the Comfort Cannon Caper — the tale of the historic Third of July — which explains why this happens on Wednesday and not Thursday.
Many years ago, beer intended for Comfort’s fledgling July Fourth festivities was delivered a day early. There were no walk-in coolers available to keep the malt cold. So, rather than allow it to spoil, two brave brothers fired the town cannon, calling everyone to assemble and enjoy that beer a day ahead of schedule.
In keeping with the tradition, members of the Little Theater will deliver beer a day ahead of the Fourth and the authentic replica of the cannon will be fired, kicking off Comfort’s festivities at 8th and High streets.
Additionally, the Boerne Village Band will perform at Remedy Hall, 804 High St., from 4-6 p.m. There will be ice cream, fruit cups, tacos, and sausage and sauerkraut provided by the Comfort Little Theater. All proceeds go to local scholarships and charities.
Fair Oaks Ranch, in collaboration with the Fair Oaks Ranch Golf and Country Club, invites residents and visitors to its annual Fourth of July celebration Thursday.
Doors open at 6 p.m. with music from a professional DJ and a wide array of food from local vendors, offering a special taste of the Hill Country.
The city’s fireworks and laser light display begins at 9 p.m.; attendees are urged to bring lawn chairs and blankets to settle in comfortably and enjoy the colorful bursts.
Residents are reminded that golf carts used for transportation are to remain within designated parking areas at the club.
Fireworks are prohibited within the city limits of Fair Oaks Ranch, leaving the pyrotechnics show to the professionals.
Outside food and beverages, including alcoholic beverages, are prohibited. A variety of food options will be available for purchase throughout the evening.
Comfort residents will come back Thursday for their July Fourth festivities. The day starts at 9:30 a.m. with a Kids’ Bicycle Parade. At 10 a.m. the annual Independence Day parade begins, as antique cars and trucks, floats, fire and police department equipment, motorcycles, bicyclists and groups and organizations on foot make their way through the Historical District of Comfort. The parade will begin at High Street and Lindner Avenue.
After the parade, head to Comfort Park for more activities. A lunch of barbecue brisket sandwiches, sausage, potato salad and beans will be available for purchase. The Miss Comfort Court pageant begins at noon.
Inside the pavilion will be the annual pie contest and a silent auction to benefit the Comfort chamber. Outside will be kids’ games, arts and crafts vendors and summertime snacks.
Many of Comfort’s shops, eateries and wineries will be open on the Fourth as well.
