CASTROVILLE – Uvalde wasn’t the only obstacle the Boerne girls soccer team faced during Tuesday night’s second-round playoff match in Castroville.
Besides the Lobos, the Lady Greyhounds faced a stiff breeze that gusted up to 20 miles per hour at times and they were also playing on a thick grass field after playing most of its matches on turf this year.
The Hounds had a slow start and were only up 1-0 at halftime but in the second half Boerne had the wind behind them and tallied 5 goals to record the 6-0 win at Medina Valley.
Boerne beat Canyon Lake in the third round on Thursday, 2-1, to improve to 18-3-5. The Lady Greyhounds advance to this year's regional tournament scheduled for next weekend.
BHS coach Jeremy Shannon said playing on grass and going into the wind were challenges.
“The grass slows you down a little bit, but we’ve played here and had success,” he said. “The biggest adjustment was getting the ball up going into the wind, we were trying to get it up and over and couldn’t, but in the second half we did.”
It stayed at 1-0 until midway through the second half, but then the flood gates opened and Boerne scored 5 goals in the final 23 minutes.
Two of the goals came about a minute apart and Shannon said that was the backbreaker.
“They started to lose confidence,” he said. “We knocked the air out of them with those goals.”
Shannon said the team was patient and then took advantage of the wind.
“I’m glad our kids preserved,” he said. “Everything didn’t work out for us in the first half, but it worked out for us in the second half.”
A’Marie Ramirez paced the team with 2 goals, Hannah Bowen had the team’s first goal of the second half and then Gigi Hernandez added another goal a minute later, Kylie Combs tallied a goal and then Taylor Durham recorded the final goal with just a second or two on the clock to cap off the win. All 6 goals were assisted and Bowen finished with 2 assists, while Kassie Lozano, Lily Griffith, Annika Fairchild and Madeline Davis all had 1 assist.
