7 on
7 state tournament championship
Geneva School of Boerne played in the TAPPS 7-on-7 State Tournament last Friday and Saturday and won the state tournament in the Bronze Bracket.
This year’s event was held in Waco at the Heart Of Texas Soccer Complex and the Eagles played seven games in pool play on Friday in a very difficult pool.
Three of the teams in Geneva’s pool played in state championship games at the tourney (Midland, Trinity Valley and Geneva) and a fourth played in and won a consolation championship (Hyde Park).
Based on pool play, the Eagles were placed in the Bronze Bracket.
Geneva traveled with a squad of 21 players, 16 of whom were rookies that had never played in the TAPPS tournament or high school 7 on 7 before.
Depth and defense proved to be the difference makers on Saturday according to Eagles head coach Grant Gaston.
Geneva beat Frassati Catholic, 41-20, in the semifinal game and then held the Live Oak Classical School to only 15 points in the decisive 27-15 victory to seal the state championship.
The head football coaches from the TAPPS schools are allowed to coach in the 7 on 7 leagues and at state and Gaston was there and assisted by Bob Rosenstiel, Dave Bryant and James Sobrevilla.
Head coaches all have different approaches and attitudes towards 7 on 7 and how much it impacts and improves their team, but Gaston said he’s “100 percent” behind it.
He said it helps with timing between the quarterback and receivers and also benefits the defense.
“The secondary has to learn how to communicate and how to fix things on the fly,” he said. “It’s beneficial, it is what you make of it, for us it’s an opportunity to get our younger guys reps.”
