BOERNE — The Boerne Community Theatre presents “ Poetic License,” a comedy by Houston playwright Carl L. Williams — and cast and audiences alike will be receiving a special appearance from the prominent regional playwright himself.
The cast of local actors features Rebecca Vidal as Martie Kyle, Robin Cunningham as Tom Kyle, Trish Moy as Janice Starkwell, Devon Vanderveer as Brook Oliphant, and Kendall Koym as Samantha Uberhausen.
Rounding out the cast is a production team of heavy hitters including director Christine Crowley, who also serves as executive director of Boerne Community Theatre; assistant director Jerry Watson, who serves as president of BCT’s board of governors; stage manager Kimberly Stoner and lights and sound operator Ben Heller.
“BCT has produced a couple of Carl Williams’s plays in the past, most recently ‘The Widow in Mink’ which delighted audiences a couple of seasons ago,” Crowley said.
According to Crowley, the playwright will be attending the production in Boerne during the show’s second weekend as a guest of the theater.
Williams is the winner of many national playwriting competitions including the Brevard New Play Competition, the Texas Nonprofit Theatres POPS! New Play Project, the Merce Award, the Maxim Mazumdar Award, the Robert J. Pickering Award, and the Backdoor Theatre New Play Award.
“We hope he has as much fun watching it as we have had preparing this production,” Crowley said.
“ Poetic License” is considered a natural fit for BCT’s audiences, a laugh-out-loud comedy about two women who had a crush on their poetry teacher in college about 30 years ago.
“Now he is back in town, as a professor of poetry and he attempts to woo them both all over again with hilarious results,” Crowley said.
Robin Cunningham, an actor in the production who also serves on BCT’s Board as head of audience development, said he has worked on approximately 20 productions at BCT since 2019.
According to Cunningham, performing at BCT is a unique experience in that the theater community feels like a family.
“We are a close and tight-knit group at BCT, but at the same time extremely welcoming of newcomers into the fold,” he said.
The show is a light and romantic comedy with many twists and turns, a “cute and funny play that our audiences will enjoy,” he added.
“Poetic License” runs Friday, July 5 to Sunday, July 21 with Friday and Saturday performances at 8 p.m. and Sunday matinees at 2:30 p.m. There will also be a Thursday evening performance July 11 at 7:30 p.m.
Don’t miss your chance to see this delightful romantic comedy unfold onstage at Boerne Community Theatre for yourself.
