City fireworks: Where to park, what to bring, how to leave

City fireworks: Where to park, what to bring, how to leave

The best community fireworks show this side of Cibolo Creek returns July 4. The annual Boerne Independence Day fireworks show is set to begin at 9 p.m. and scheduled to last 15-20 minutes.

Boerne City Park will only be available for parking this year. To allow for increased spectator safety and to reduce fire risk, all fields at City Park will not be open to spectators, as most of the soccer fields fall within the required fireworks buffer zone while others are closed for summer maintenance.

The show is free and open to the public. Spectators can arrive when they please, but city officials have issued a friendly reminder that all fields will be off limits to the public, as will portions of the Cibolo Creek trail closer to show time.

Parking is on a first come, first served basis at City Park and Champion High School. Paid parking by donation will also be available at the Kendall County Fairgrounds. Additionally, ongoing construction at CHS could impact some of the parking.

There will be food vendors at City Park serving fair-style foods such as hot dogs, nachos and snacks, but spectators can bring their own snacks and beverages. The food trucks will be accepting cash and cards. Just remember, glass is not allowed.

The show is best enjoyed on a lawn chair or blanket, but we ask families not to bring tents, to avoid blocking the show for the people around them. Lastly, though pets are not prohibited, it is best to leave them at home where they will be more comfortable and in a less noisy environment.

To prepare for the show, on Thursday morning a fireworks team will begin setting up and loading the tubes. The tubes must be properly set up, cleaned and anchored together, with the larger tubes being buried for safety purposes. Then the process of loading more than 500 tubes with the fireworks material begins.

Emergency crews and equipment are also strategically located in the fireworks “fall zone” to prevent potential fire issues.

The State of Texas requires that a qualified individual with a pyrotechnic license manage and oversee the entire show from start to finish. Fire Chief Manny Casarez will oversee shooting the show.

Once the show is complete, spectators can expect some traffic delays as everyone begins to head home. For people who park at City Park or the Kendall County Fairgrounds, they will have to exit the lots via City Park Road. From there they can access Charger Boulevard or Herff Ranch Blvd to get onto Highway 46.

Officers will be at multiple intersections in and around the park and fairground to help direct traffic.

For any additional questions, please contact Boerne Parks and Recreation at 830-248-1635. You can also monitor the city of Boerne Facebook page for any additional announcements.

Residents are reminded that city ordinances prohibit personal fireworks inside city limits, which includes the Kendall County Fairgrounds. Bring your own refreshments, along with blankets and lawn chairs to enjoy the show.
