A Comfort 4th: Pageant, parade and Cannon Caper beer run

ROSE BURCKHARDT

COMFORT CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

July Fourth is, beyond any doubt, the most celebrated summer holiday on the calendar, and we think you will find Comfort’s 2024 festivities more fun than you can imagine.

I am willing to bet that everyone has fond memories of at least one 4th of July celebration from their past. What is yours?

My favorite was watching a parade in the very small town of Afton, Minnesota. It went down Main Street, did a U-turn at the end of the block, and came back in the opposite direction. We got to see that parade both coming and going.

Comfort’s Independence Day celebration actually begins on Wednesday, July 3. The Boerne Village Band will perform at Remedy Hall (804 High St.) from 4-6 p.m. There will be ice cream and paletas from Michoacan ice cream shop, fruit cups and tacos from Nortenos, and sausage and sauerkraut provided by the Comfort Little Theater. All proceeds go to local scholarships and charities.

And at 5:15 p.m., the Comfort Little Theatre will present the main event known as the Comfort Cannon Caper — the tale of the historic Third of July — which explains why this happens on Wednesday and not Thursday.

The story goes something like this: Way back when, it happened that the beer intended for the fledgling Comfort’s July 4th festivities was delivered a day early. Well, times were such that there were no walk-in coolers to keep the malt cold. So, rather than allow it to spoil, two brave brothers fired the town cannon, calling everyone to assemble and they enjoyed that beer a day ahead of schedule.

Join us at the intersection of 8th and High streets to hear the tale told by those who know it well.

And in keeping with the story, beer will be delivered, again a day ahead of the 4th and the authentic replica of the cannon will be fired, kicking off Comfort’s festivities. You won’t want to miss this.

Small towns take great pride in their July 4 celebrations, and Comfort is no exception. Ours is billed as the most spectacular event of the summer — and by golly, it will be just that.

We start off on Thursday focusing on the children, who are invited to bring their bikes at 9:30 a.m., all decked out for the day, to be part of the delightful Kids’ Bicycle Parade.

At 10 a.m. the annual Independence Day parade begins, and ours promises to be the quintessential smalltown Fourth of July parade. Marvel at the sight of antique cars and trucks, creative floats, shiny fire engines, motorcycles and enthusiastic bicyclists as they make their way through the Historic District of Comfort.

We also want to mention that the parade route has been changed a bit this year, making it unnecessary to close off exit 524 on Interstate 10. This should make your travels into Comfort easier. The parade will begin at High Street and Lindner Avenue. Plan your parking and viewing options with that in mind.

After the parade, head out to Comfort Park for a plethora of fun activities. Your taste buds will be delighted with our barbecue brisket sandwiches, sausage, potato salad and beans, all for just $15.

As you enjoy your lunch, you will be treated to live music by M. T. Bain. Barbecue tickets can be purchased at the Comfort chamber office, or at Comfort Park on the 4th.

Hang around for a while because the Miss Comfort Court Pageant starts at noon. Inside the Pavilion, there’s the annual pie contest and a silent auction to benefit the Comfort chamber. Outside you will find kids’ games, arts and crafts vendors and some summertime snacks.

It’s not too late to sign up for the parade, to be a vendor, or even to volunteer. Visit our website (www.comfortchamber. com) or call the chamber office at 830-995-3131.

Comfort’s shops, eateries and wineries will be open on the Fourth, so plan to spend your day — or even two — because you will always find Comfort in Texas. Happy July 4th to you all!
