Summer Reading Challenge
The reading challenge this summer is all about being adventurous. Children will be encouraged to have fun with reading as they choose and accomplish challenges like “read under the stars,” “read about a country you wish to visit,” “read something new,” and more.
Children will receive cute stickers each week as a reward for completing the challenges. Finally, don’t forget to turn in your finished reading log each week on Friday to be entered into a drawing for a chance to win a prize. We have two cases filled with fabulous toys to choose from as well as Barnes and Noble gift cards.
If you haven’t started our summer reading challenge yet, now is the perfect time: Stop by the Youth Department desk to pick up a challenge sheet or email Constance at: [email protected] if out of town or unable to stop in.
Junior ‘Library of Things’
We are so excited to announce a new addition to our youth library collection. Library card holders can now check out items from our newly established Junior “Library of Things,” or Jr. LOT.
The Jr. LOT is all about offering items beyond books to patrons. The Jr. LOT focuses on entertaining and educational items children and parents may want to try out. The stars of our collection include multiple Toniebox sets with different themes.
A Toniebox is a new and innovative audio player designed for kids 3 and older that is great for bedtime stories, music and education. A Toniebox provides the opportunity for a screen-free listening experience that inspires your kids’ imagination. It has an easyto- use design that even the youngest children can operate independently.
We have several Toniebox sets with your children’s favorite characters including princesses, Paw Patrol, Disney and Pixar characters, National Geographic and more.
Hansel and Gretel Storywalk
Take a leisurely walk down the Old Number 9 Trail to be captivated by an adaptation of the classic tale Hansel and Gretel.
Stop by the library then make your way to the back, where you can walk across the two bridges to get to the Storywalk. This activity is perfect for families who are looking for a little fresh air and relaxing exercise in June and July.
Enjoy the wonderful scenery as you read the panels set up along the walk which will unfold this wonderful rendition of a classic story.
Christmas in July closing party
Mark your calendars for Monday, July 22, at 10:30 a.m. for our fabulous Christmas in July party. We know how much children love Christmas, so this year we wanted to celebrate it twice.
Stop by the library to enjoy some Christmas carols and music performed by the Austin award-winning Mr. Will, that will have your toes tapping. Children can also enjoy a snack of delicious Christmas cookies and chocolate milk.
To make it a true Christmas experience despite the Texas heat, there will be snow machines set up to cool everyone down. Lastly, what would Christmas be without a special guest from the North Pole? Mr. and Ms. Claus will be present, making it a true Christmas experience.
