The Boerne Champion girls basketball team closed out the first round of district play Friday on the road at Buda Johnson.

Champion won Friday’s contest 57-31 and improves to 7-1 in 26-5A. The Lady Chargers are 20-5 overall and begin the second round of district Tuesday at New Braunfels Canyon.

Canyon also wrapped up the first round of league play Friday and is in first place at 8-0. They’ve handed Champion its only loss in 26-5A so Tuesday’s game is big for both because if the Chargers win, they’ll slide into a tie for first and if Canyon wins, they have sole possession of first place and would have swept Champion to gain the head-to-head tiebreaker.

The Lady Chargers have been shooting it well from the outside lately and the trend continued last Friday after Champion hit 6 of 11 3-pointers for 55 percent shooting.

Khiara Flugence hit her only 3-point attempt and led the team with 22 points and 10 rebounds to make it a double-double.

Madyson Marquard went 3 for 7 from beyond the arch and tallied 13 points as two Chargers were in double figures. Adri Davenport nailed both of her

Adri Davenport nailed both of her 3-point shots and finished with 8 points, Kristen Borgerding added 6 points, Grace Menzies scored 4, while Adriana Barreiro and Emily Plank both chipped in with 2.

Marquard dished out 4 assists, while Davenport and Flugence both came up with 2 steals.
