BOERNE — The Boerne Independent School District saw 96 students from Boerne and Champion high schools earn their certified clinical medical assistant certification during the 2023-24 school year.
The students were certified by the National Healthcareer Association, becoming certified clinical medical assistants.
Boerne ISD’s medical assistant program is a four-course sequence and includes topics such as anatomy, physiology and medical terminology. Students must also pass the certifying exam.
The students shadow and intern with physicians in various settings, including the emergency room, physical therapy, dental, ophthalmology and family medicine.
Medical assistants perform a variety of tasks, including taking patient vitals, assisting providers with exams and procedures, administering medications and performing necessary laboratory procedures.
The district’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) health science program offers students the opportunity to earn the following certifications: OSHA 10 Health, patient care technician, EKG technician, phlebotomy, certified clinical medical assistant and registered nurse (ECHS PTECH).
