We need to get back on track

Earlier this month I took a business trip. I entered the airport, checked in, took a plane ride and picked up my rental car.

Earlier this month I took a business trip. I entered the airport, checked in, took a plane ride and picked up my rental car.

I was wearing a facemask the whole time, per edict from the federal government. After considering that over 2 million Americans enter an airport every day, the vast majority of them not wearing a facemask anyplace else, I wondered when Washington would realize the pandemic is over.

Are they totally clueless? The passenger beside me wondered the same thing, asking “What happened to my country?”

But Congress has its own rules. Days before, Congress ended its mask mandate for the House chamber, just in time for Biden’s televised State of the Union address. Following the science?

Following the political science, certainly. Small wonder that Americans are totally fed up with this administration.

Actually, there is a long list of progressive policy failures in Washington. Epic failures, certainly. Here are just a few.

Inflation is at a 40-year high, as we all know from our grocery bills. Gasoline and diesel prices have shot through the roof. I just paid $118 to fill my tank!

For the affluent among us, inflation is just annoying. But for lower-income Americans and retirees on fixed incomes, it’s a financial disaster.

Every day, Americans are deciding what to do without. Meanwhile, Washington passes multi-trillion dollar spending programs and frantically prints new money. Then it even more spending.

Just two years ago, America was energy self-sufficient. Our Texas energy industry was the envy of the world, a strong exporter.

But with pipelines shut down and government regulations exploding, the current administration goes to foreigners to beg for more oil. In fact, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates will not take a phone call from this White House.

Border security is national security, but the progressive liberal open border policies are a disaster for America, especially for Texas. Human trafficking and drug smuggling are taking place right through Kendall County on Interstate 10. Texans are left to defend the border ourselves while the administration seems uninterested.

A crime wave has swept America. At least 16 American cities, including Austin, have set new homicide records in 2021. A total of 63 police officers were killed by gunfire last year alone. Progressive rhetoric about defunding the police has led to huge staffing problems in law enforcement.

Our foreign adversaries in Iran are about to receive a cash bonanza from America, when they sign a nuclear arms agreement. Incredibly, Russia has been an equal partner in the negotiations.

America is on the wrong track.

Thankfully, there is a better way. Beginning this November, we can elect a Republican majority in Congress. To put America first, we need to stop the progressive leftist policies of this White House; a Republican Congress will do just that.

Republicans are the party of a growing economy and limited government. Government cannot create prosperity, but it can limit or destroy it. We believe the government should not spend money it doesn’t have; we believe the government has more than enough of our tax money.

While we hear about various Washington schemes to raise taxes, tax cuts are breaking out all over in Republican states. And since Americans can choose where to live, they are voting with their feet.

In the 10 states which gained the most residents from domestic immigration last year, state and local tax burdens are significantly lower. They are all Republican states. For example, Florida has no income tax at all, but spends half as much as New York on state government. Conservative Republican government gets the credit.

Texas is one of six states in America which now has more employment than before the pandemic. And as you would easily guess, all six are led by Republicans.

We need to unleash the great Texas energy industry. Approve the Keystone pipeline permit. Instead of the government erecting roadblocks, it should facilitate the creation of energy resources which are clean, affordable, secure and abundant.

We need to leave the Iran nuclear deal in the dumpster where it was tossed in 2018. We should not reward Iran, a nation whose leaders chant “Death to America” every day, for their bad behavior.

In November, just seven months from now, we can elect a conservative Republican Congress. We, the people, can take back our great nation and stop the madness. November 8 can’t get here soon enough.

Scott S. Kramer is Chairman of the Republican Party of Kendall County.
