Boerne High graduated a ton of experience from last year’s boys basketball team that reached the state semifinals.
Three of those players signed college scholarships to play at the next level and that experience will be hard to replace.
BHS coach Kimble McHone said it’s fair to call it a rebuilding year but isn’t focused on how you label this season.
“I think we just coach the guys in front of us and this is who we have and let’s put them in the best position possible,” he said about this year’s approach. “They believe they can win; they’re supposed to win and they’re the defending regional champs.
Even though they graduated a lot, McHone said the cupboard isn’t bare.
“It’s a good team, we have capabilities of making another run,” he said.
A look at the team
Last year’s team went 27-4 overall and won the district with a 10-0 mark. The appearance in the state semifinals was only the fourth time a BHS boys team had made it that far.
Returners Devin Styles and Houston Hendrix were a big part of last year’s team and both were first-team all-district selections, while Trevor Agarwal was honorable mention.
Rashawn Galloway was also a first-team pick but he is focusing on baseball and sitting out basketball.
McHone said this season’s team is built different than last year’s, but it gives him some options.
“We have guys who can do certain things well. It’s almost like football where you’re in personnel packages, we can go big and we can go small,” he said. “The lineup you see one night can be completely different the next game. It’s a really good team and they’re excited about it, and I think they all understand, and everybody is buying into it.”
McHone continued. “We might have guys with
“We might have guys with double-figure points one night, who may not play the next game,” he said. “We can have three or four different line ups on a given night. Right now, we can play 10 or 11 guys.”
On this year’s roster is Josh Hines, Trevor Agarwal, Braden Smith, Koen Wolff, Colton Hoegemeyer, Preston Thompson, Barrett Pape, Houston Hendrix, Devin Styles, Jeffrey Brown, Sam Waters and Koby Hunter.
“We have a go-to guy in Devin who can score from anywhere on the floor and that makes things easier on everybody and Houston is a great role player,” McHone said. “We need one guy to come off some screens and make some 3s for us. If we find that, we’re going to be tough to beat.”
A look at the district
Boerne is in District 28-4A with Bandera, Fredericksburg, Wimberley, Canyon Lake and Davenport.
Either Boerne or Fredericksburg has won the last 12 district titles with the Greyhounds winning seven outright and the Battlin’ Billies claiming three and the teams sharing two of them.
Boerne ran the table in district last year and claimed the district crown after having shared the previous two with Fred.
The Battlin’ Billies are struggling this year and McHone said Wimberley will have a say in determining this year’s 28-4A champion.
“I think Wimberley plays a big role this year, this is their coach’s third or fourth year there and he’s had guys in his system for a while,” McHone said. “I’ve been watching their scores and they’re scoring lots of points. They’re physical and they’ll battle.”
Even though the Battlin’ Billies are struggling right now, McHone said you can never count them out.
“They’ll get everything worked out and they’ll still be good,” he said.
McHone said his team is tough, but wants them to execute better, especially by the time district rolls around on Jan. 14.
“We have to get better at execution, it’s one thing to do it in practice or against the JV but it’s another to do it in a game,” he said.
