It’s Boerne vs. Calallen once again

Boerne and Calallen are no strangers to one another and clashes in the playoffs have been common over the years.

The two baseball powers meet this week for the right to represent Region IV at the 4A state baseball tournament.

BHS faced the Wildcats in the regional semifinals two years ago in 2022 and it went three games before Calallen prevailed.

The Cats took the first game at Coastal Bend College in Beeville, 12-6, but Boerne evened the series in Game 2 with a 3-2 victory at NEISD Sports Park.

It went to the third game immediately after Game 2 and the Wildcats prevailed 2-1 in a contest where Calallen coach Steve Chapman was chasing history.

With Calallen’s win over the Hounds in Game 3, Chapman became the winningest coach in Texas high school baseball history with 1,116 wins.

Calallen lost to Sinton in the regional finals and the Pirates went on to win state, but Chapman, who has since retired, has the record.

Chapman was the coach 20 years ago when BHS and the Wildcats met in the regional finals in 2004 for the right to go to state and the Greyhounds won the series in three games and went on to capture the 4A title.

They met the next year in 2005 and Callen got some revenge and prevailed over the Hounds to win the series.

This year’s version of the Wildcats has swept La Feria, 12-0 and 12-1, swept Sinton, 5-2 and 5-3, went three with Floresville and won the first game, 4-0, dropped the second, 1-0 and closed it out in the third, 4-3.

They beat Needville last week and have only lost one game in the playoffs, while the Hounds are also 8-1 with sweeps over Kennedy, Navasota and Bishop before going three games with El Campo.
