The Boerne Independent School District late last month announced its 2022 teacher and support staff member of the year winners. The district teacher of the year is Jenny Breuer from Champion High School, while the district support staffer of the year is Boerne Middle School South’s Zulema King.
“Being voted teacher and support staff of the year is a tremendous honor,” BISD Superintendent Tom Price said. “With all that is going on in the world these past two years, it has never been more important to recognize the best of the best in Boerne ISD.”
Breuer, who received a $10,000 check from Toyota of Boerne as well as a $1,500 stipend from Boerne ISD, is in her eighth year in the local district and her third year at Champion. Information from the district stated she teaches in the Career and Technical Education Department as a business incubator and entrepreneurship teacher. She also serves as the assistant cross country and track coach.
“I am honored and humbled to be named district teacher of the year,” Breuer said. “I appreciate the opportunity that Dr. Price and Boerne ISD have given me to build an entrepreneurship program from the ground up. Boerne is an amazing community to live and work in, and I am joining an amazing class of educators who have earned this award.”
The runner-up for district teacher of the year was Fair Oaks Ranch Elementary School kindergarten teacher Courtney Klein. Klein will receive a $1,500 stipend from Boerne ISD.
The 10 other campus teachers of the year will receive $500 from Toyota of Boerne as well as a $1,000 stipend from Boerne ISD.
Those teachers, announced earlier, are Bryan Bishop, special education, Boerne High School; Amber Waltz, science, Boerne Middle School North; Annie O’Connor, special education math, Boerne Middle School South; Jennifer Uhl, math, Voss Middle School; Jessica Lewis, life skills, Curington Elementary School; Amanda Asher, second grade, Cibolo Creek Elementary School; Melanie Gohn, second grade, Fabra Elementary School; Courtney Klein, kindergarten, Fair Oaks Ranch Elementary School; Travis Clark, physical education, Herff Elementary School; Vanessa Ploetz, life skills, Kendall Elementary School; and Buddy Preuss, special education, Van Raub Elementary School.
King, who received a $1,000 check from Blackboard and a $1,000 stipend from Boerne ISD, has been with BISD for 10 years, all at BMSS. King serves as the principal’s secretary at South, where she is the heart and soul of the campus while performing many roles, information from BISD stated.

The 11 other campus support staff of the year will receive a $500 stipend from Boerne ISD.
Those employees are Judi Noland, receptionist, Boerne High School; Cynthia Baker, head custodian, Champion High School; Linda Dodd, teaching assistant, Boerne Middle School North; Rina Romero Grona, registrar, Voss Middle School; Teresa Gomez, life skills teaching assistant, Curington Elementary School; Nancy Callegari, special education teaching assistant, Cibolo Creek Elementary School; Becky Behrens, special education teaching assistant, Fabra Elementary School; Yolanda Hamilton, challenge lab teaching assistant, Fair Oaks Ranch Elementary School; Leonor Cabral, dual language teaching assistant, Herff Elementary School; Karen Ellis, teaching assistant, Kendall Elementary School; Mendy Loaiza, computer lab teaching assistant, Van Raub Elementary School; Anna Nieto, testing specialist, central office; Lloyd Hausman, welder, maintenance department; and Paula Smith, bus assistant, transportation.
“We are very proud of Jenny and Zulema for their hard work and dedication to our students,” Price said. “Everyone we talk to on their campuses has nothing but wonderful things to say about the positive impact they make each and every day. Jenny and Zulema are truly deserving of this honor. We wish nothing but the best for them and their families.”
Breuer was awarded the teacher of the year during last Saturday’s Boerne Education Foundation’s Rock on fundraiser while King received her honor during Monday’s board of trustees meeting.
“Thank you to Vic and Shawn Vaughn and everyone at Toyota of Boerne for being so supportive of our school district,” Price said. “We have a wonderful partnership with them and are grateful for their support. We can’t thank them enough for their generous $10,000 award for Jenny. Also a thank you to Blackboard for their support and for awarding a $1,000 prize to Zulema.”
