Both Boerne Champion and Boerne High won their Game 1 openers Thursday night in their best-of-three, third-round series.

Champion was home and defeated Kerrville Tivy, while BHS was on the road at Sinton to take on El Campo.

Game 2s were Friday for both. If a third game is needed in the Chargers – Antlers series, it’ll be Saturday at Southwest Legacy, 1 p.m.

If the Greyhounds needed a third game, it was going to be after Game 2 Friday at Sinton where the entire series is taking place.

Boerne Champion

Champion only scored in one inning but it was enough for the Chargers as they defeated the Antlers, 2-1, in a defensive battle Thursday at Charger Field.

Tivy plated a run in the third inning and used an error, double and a single for the 1-0 lead.

Kerrville’s lead held until the sixth when Champion chased Oklahoma State commit Stormy Rhodes from the game.

In the sixth, Cam Logan walked and made it to second. With two outs, Gage Goldberg, who has come up clutch all season long for the Chargers, doubled to right field to tie it up at 1-1 after Logan scored from second.

Goldberg’s courtesy runner, Brock Browning, later scored after Garland Whitehead hit a bloop that was mishandled by the Tivy second baseman, which allowed Browning to make it home and give the Chargers their first and only lead of the game at 2-1.

Rhodes gave up one more hit and left with a pitch count of 100.

Tivy still had to bat in the seventh but didn’t put a runner on after Sawyer Smith struck out two batters and got the other to fly out to right field.

Smith tossed 101 pitches, scattered 3 hits, gave up no earned runs and 1 walk, while striking out 5.

Goldberg had 2 of their 7 hits and picked up an RBI, while Logan and Browning scored their only runs.

Boerne High

Hudson McNew helped the Greyhounds get off to a fast start after he homered in the first inning to give BHS a 2-0 lead.

A Reese House single, followed by a sac bunt and a double from Dylan Perez gave Boerne a 3-0 edge by the second.

El Campo jumped on the board in the third with a two runs after they recorded a single and a walk, followed by a bases- clearing double and it was 3-2.

It stayed there until the sixth when the Greyhounds picked up a couple of insurance runs.

BHS loaded the bases with a single, intentional walk to McNew and another single. Ryan Hooper singled to bring in a run and make it 4-2 and the bases were still juiced.

Later in the inning, Ronnie Scarbrough scored from third on a passed ball for the 5-2 lead and what turned out to be the final run of the game.

Campbell Jackson threw 97 pitches and tossed all seven innings to get the complete- game victory. He yielded 4 hits, 2 runs, 1 walk and fanned 7. BHS had 10 hits including 2 apiece from Hooper, McNew and House.
