Boerne Champion concluded its spring football drills with its annual spring game Wednesday at Charger Field.
Using modified scoring, the Charger offense beat the defense, 120-75.
It was the 11th spring game in the program’s history and the offense has won eight of them, including the last seven. The 2020 game was cancelled because of COVID.
Chargers head coach Blane Ellis said the game will help answer some questions they have going into the offseason.
“A lot of great things happened on both sides of the ball. It’s been a quick whistle all spring so I was a little worried about defense and how we would tackle today and I felt like we did a good job with that,” he said. “We played with energy on both sides of the ball, offensively we did a good job of moving the ball and maintaining possession.”
The offense earned points with first downs and touchdowns, while the defense picked up points by forcing punts and with turnovers.
The offense won three of the four quarters, with the defense taking the third period, 18-15.
Ellis said ultimately the score didn’t matter because the game is about moving the program forward as they prepare for a new season. The coach said every practice and the spring game were all recorded and will be looked at this summer.
“It’s just another evaluation tool for us, it’s a glorified practice and we’ll use it as a tool and keep working,” he said. “We’ll reevaluate our entire spring and since we recorded everything, we’ll have all summer to dive into it and look at it.
“We’ll make some adjustments over the summer based on who we’ve got and how they performed and we’re not doing it last minute,” Ellis added. Three of the baseball players chose to participate in the game even though they didn’t have to because the Charger baseball team is still in the playoffs.
Garland Whitehead, Mark Thompson, Brody Bendele are members of the varsity baseball team and also took part in spring football drills.
Ellis said most of the football practices were in the morning so it didn’t interfere with baseball too much.
“They all wanted to go,” he said. “As long as we didn’t conflict with baseball because baseball was the priority.”
Three-year starting quarterback Jordan Ballin is graduating and there’s a battle for the position with at least four players in the mix.
Ellis said they wouldn’t name a starting QB until after their only scrimmage in August. Because the Chargers had spring drills, they have to start a week later in August and only get one scrimmage.
“We’ll probably (name a starter) after the Churchill scrimmage. We’re not going to be in a hurry to make a decision,” he said. “We’re going to give every opportunity we can to these guys to go earn a spot and give our coaches every opportunity to evaluate and choose the best guy for the job.”
Ellis just wrapped up his first year as the head coach. He took over for Keith Kaiser and has helped to grow the program.
Ellis said there are currently about 180 players in the program with just freshman, sophomores and juniors. That doesn’t count this year’s seniors or 8th graders, who will be incoming freshman in the fall.
“We have big numbers; we’re busting at the seams,” he said. “We’re as big as we’ve ever been as far as numbers go and it’s a good problem to have. It’s the way it should be if we continue to grow our program.”
