Sips and sounds: Find it in Comfort

COMFORT CHAMBER CHAT

The history of popular music in the United States is as varied and interesting as are clothing styles, eating habits, art and architecture.

I found myself thinking about the disco days of the 1970s. I suspect many of us can recall the twirling disco balls, lights and colors, dress and dances, and of course the songs that became the hallmark of the disco scene.

I also remember the lament by small local ensembles who could not get gigs because disco was the thing, and no one was hiring live bands.

Talent, musical or otherwise, is shared in a variety of ways: Recorded, live, original, print, borrowed, read, listened to and so on. Consider Comfort.

We are a small community without a movie theatre or a lot of restaurants that serve food in the evenings. However, we have beautiful scenery, delicious locally produced wines, talent to boot and small-town charm to burn, as well as downright friendly folks.

So just what do you do after the sun goes down, when you are looking for a place to go and something to do? Come to Comfort and you will see.

For starters, several businesses in Comfort have successfully paired wine and live music to create a relaxing atmosphere for sips and sounds. America Reclaimed, for example, recently opened their Longhorn Lounge, (810 Ave. A, just behind the Post Office) where you can enjoy local wines, live music and tasty tapas in a welcoming setting.

Just a few blocks away, you will find Remedy Hall, (804 High St.) another lovely location that offers a plethora of interesting events and activities: Friday Karaoke, Saturday live music, pickleball, and a Wednesday ladies’ night.

Singing Water Vineyards brings local musical talent and groups from out-of-state to their location on Mill Dam Road. Set out in the country, the scenery is lovely and there is plenty of room to roam.

Just down the road a way is Bending Branch Winery. You may have enjoyed their recent celebration of Derby Day. The tasting room and outdoor seating are nestled in the beauty of the Texas Hill Country and it’s always a delight.

And we would be remiss not to mention La Calabria Pizzeria & Catering on Hermann Sons Road. The outdoor seating there will convince you that you left Texas behind and are now sitting at an outdoor café in Italy.

There are also several spots that offer interesting events from time to time. Gaddis Methodist Church and the Comfort Chamber of Commerce partner to bring you Music in the Park on the second Tuesday of each month from May through October. The Ursa Tasting Room at Branch on High (Street) presents a Quarterly Poetry Reading, along with award-winning wines. Opportunities to hear the written word are almost as rare a live bands were in the ‘70s. A bit further up the street is the Ingenhuett on High. This elegant event center has been home to performances of ballet, classical singing, and even a Mahjong tournament.

Also on High Street, you will find Hotel Giles, where every Friday evening is “Happy Hour.” Guests are asked to contribute some additional snacks and drinks to those provided by the hotel. The evening’s entertainment includes a jam session, where everyone is invited to show off his or her talent. Courtyard events also take place from time to time.

Newsom Vineyards at Comfort (717 Front St.) brings live music to the Backyard that you can enjoy along with their High Plains wines. And the Cocky Rooster Bar (1014 Front St.) offers activities such as dart, poker tournaments and shuffleboard, along with beverages and snacks.

And if you just prefer a place to eat, Comfort is home to Bella Sera, Comfort Pizza, High’s Café (until 6 p.m.) and The Board Couple.

So, before you turn on the TV and become a couch potato, hop in your car and visit Comfort. This creative community knows how to put on an evening you are not likely to forget for a long time!

Hope to see you soon, as you discover Comfort in Texas!
