SAN MARCOS – For the second straight year, the Champion girls soccer team faced Georgetown in the opening round of the 5A playoffs and for the second consecutive season, the Lady Chargers shut out the Eagles.
Last year’s win was 2-0 and on Friday in San Marcos, it was closer, but the Chargers still prevailed, 1-0.
Champion improves to 16-3-3 overall and faces the Jefferson Mustangs in the second round at Alamo Stadium on Tuesday, 7 p.m.
Addison Huber had the team’s only goal and it occurred in the first half. Shelby Christian sent the ball back to Huber, who controlled it and let it fly from 35 yards out.
The shot looked high but it curled in under the top of the crossbar and found the back of the net in the 12th minute for the only goal all night from either side.
Champion controlled ball possession and was dominating field position. It appeared that the Chargers would score a few more but it never happened.
“I thought we were going to put two more in, but they really made adjustments and picked up the pace and were hustling more to the ball in the second half,” Chargers coach Kara Walters said. “We were having a hard time making the same passes and receiving the same balls in the second half.”
Walters said the team’s strong start was the difference in the match.
“We played some good soccer, that first 10 minutes was the best soccer we’ve seen out of our girls all season and we’ve seen some good soccer,” she said. “I feel like we’re just continuing to get better at this point.”
Georgetown only had 1 official shot in the first half, but played better in the second half and managed 4 shot attempts for the 5 total in the match, while the Chargers tallied 19 shots, 11 on goal.
“The concern going into the second half was the counter attacks,” Walters said. “They did have a few more counter attacks and we did adjust. We were more defensive with our center and holding mid, that seemed to help.”
Walters said they stayed aggressive offensively and weren’t deterred by the fact that they only had 1 goal all night.
“I think the best thing to do in those situations is to continue to attack and not get into a defensive mindset,” she said. “You just have to keep trying to get another one on the board.”
Audrey Riordan was in goal and came up with 4 saves.
