Lady Chargers fall to Canyon, Johnson

Boerne Champion closed out the first round of district softball and then opened the second round, all last weekend with both games on the road. 

Champion was at Buda Johnson Friday and then visited NB Canyon on Saturday and dropped both contests. 

Johnson edged the Chargers 1-0, and then Canyon won, 15-5. Champion is now 5-4 in district and 9-7-1 overall. The team is off Tuesday and continues district play Friday at home against Dripping Springs. 

Vs. NB Canyon 

The Cougars were able to beat the Chargers in six innings 15-5, but it was close through the first four innings. 

Canyon was up 6-5 after four but added 5 runs in the fifth and another 4 in the sixth to kick in the mercy rule. The Chargers did beat the Cougars in the first round of district. 

Champion finished with 8 hits, including a home run by Madison Hall in the third; Ashley Ottmers doubled and singled, scored twice and picked up an RBI; Krista Tarver and Carmen Vela both hit 2 singles and Vela drove in a run and Kassidy Kureska walked and scored. 

Vela went 4 innings in the circle and gave up 6 earned runs, struck out 6 and walked 4, while Ava Trevino also tossed 1.1 innings and yielded 9 earned runs. 

Vs. Buda Johnson 

Johnson scored a single run in the third and that was the only run of the game in Friday’s defensive battle. 

There were only 3 hits in the game, 2 from the Chargers and 1 from the Jags. 

In the third, Johnson used a single and an error, followed by a sac fly to get its only run. 

Ashley Ottmers and Krista Tarver recorded Champion’s 2 hits, while Gabi Vela walked twice and Ava Trevino also reached on a walk. 

Carmen Vela went 6 innings in the circle and tossed 108 pitches. She gave up 1 hit, 1 run, struck out 10 and walked 3.
