AUSTIN – Champion sent five athletes to this year’s 5A state track and field meet at Mike Myers Stadium to compete in eight different events and two of the athletes returned to Boerne with four medals.
Elizabeth Leachman claimed two gold in distance events and Ephraim Tonn-Bourg earned two silver medals in wheelchair events.
Leachman also raced in the 800 and finished second for 2 more points to go with the 20 points she earned after winning both the 1600 and 3200.
The points she accumulated in the three races helped the Lady Chargers tie for sixth in the final team standings with 22 points.
Leachman set new 5A state meet records with her times in the 3200 and 1600. She clocked in at 10:11.40 in the 3200 and then turned in a 4:41.36 in the 1600.
Leachman also came in fifth in the 800 and recorded a 2:11.73.
Leachman raced with a strained hamstring and said it got better as the day progressed but added that it was tight in the morning.
“It bothered me mostly in the two mile, but after I got it retaped better and did some stretching and rolling out between the races, it felt a little better for the other two, so I was grateful for that,” she said.
The sophomore sensation said the two championships she won both mean a lot to her.
“They’re both special for different reasons. (The 1600) last year is in a lot of ways how I got started with my success, so to be able to come here and relive that is just amazing,” she said. “And to get the opportunity to run in the 3200 after such a disappointing end of the season last year really meant a lot, so both of them are equally special to me in different ways.”
Charlie Houck
Charlie Houck ran Friday morning in the 3200 and posted a time of 9:33.18 to finish in 8th place and capped his senior year at state.
Houck’s best lap came on his second in the eight-lap race with a 1:08.05, while he turned in a 1:08.27 on his first lap.
Brooks Jones
Senior Brooks Jones earned 2 team points for the Chargers after he finished fifth in the high jump after he cleared 15-0.
The 2 points that Jones earned were the only two the Champion boys picked up at the meet and placed them tied for 46th in the final team standings.
Jones cleared 14-0 on his third try, cleared 14-6 on his first attempt and made it past 15-0 on his second vault.
There were six vaulters who cleared 15-0 and advanced to try and clear 15-6. Five of them went out at 15-6, including Jones.
When something like that happens, the tiebreaker becomes the number of misses at the last height cleared.
The only one who cleared 15-6 was eventual state champion Cantrelle Brooks of New Caney Porter.
Hayden Brace
Hayden Brace competed in the triple jump and ended up in eighth place.
Brace, a senior, went 44-8.50 on his best attempt, which came on his fifth leap. His second-best distance was 44-6.75 and it came on his first leap, which had in in fifth place through the first four rounds.
Ephraim Tonn-Bourg
In the 100-wheelchair event, Tonn-Bourg placed second with a time of 17.34.
In the 400-wheelchair event, Tonn-Bourg, a senior, also came in 2nd in the event after clocking in at 1:02.99.
Tonn-Bourg battled Owen Horsley for gold in both events. The freshman from Prosper Rock Hill edged Tonn-Bourg in the two races to take first and give Tonn-Bourg silver in both events.
