Champion took Game 1 from MacArthur in their best-of-three series that started Thursday at Charger Field, 10-1.
Game 2 was Friday in San Antonio at Northeast Sports Park. A third game, if needed, takes place Saturday at 1 p.m., also at the NE Sports Park.
Thursday’s Game 1 was 0-0 through two innings but back-to-back triples in the bottom of the third got the Chargers going.
Andrew Harrison singled, Jordan Ballin walked and then Quinn Grable tripled to make it 2-0. Evan Kuhl followed with another triple and the Chargers were up 3-0 after Grable scored.
Cam Logan laid down a sac bunt to bring in Kuhl from third and it was 4-0 and that was all the offense the Chargers needed.
For good measure, Champion added 3 runs in the third and 3 in the sixth for the 10-1 lead. The Chargers were a hit or two away from run ruling the Brahmas, but the Mac defense held tough, and the game went to the seventh.
The Brahmas hit the ball well and finished with 8 hits but only 1 run, while the Chargers recorded 11 hits.
Sawyer Smith went 6 innings and scattered 7 hits, gave up a run, only walked 1 and struck out 4 to get the win.
Aidan Smith closed it out and pitched in the seventh and yielded a hit, 2 walks and no runs.
