Chargers handle Hays in opening round

Chargers handle Hays in opening round

Sometimes a No. 1 seed facing a No. 4 seed has an easy time in their firstround meeting and then there are times when the No. 4 seed puts up a good fight like Buda Hays did in their first round series with Boerne Champion.

Even though the No. 1 seeded Chargers swept the No. 4 seeded Hawks, Champion won by slim margins, 8-4, and 5-3.

However, a win is a win and the Chargers advance to the second round where they’ll play a series with MacArthur.

Champion is 28-6 overall and hosts Game 1 Thursday, 7 p.m. The series continues Friday at the Northeast Sports Park, 7 p.m. and a third game if needed, will take place Saturday at the Northeast Sports Park, 1 p.m.

Game 1 Champion 8, Hays 4

Thursday’s opening game was tied at 4-4 through five innings before the Chargers scored the final four runs of the game for the 8-4 victory.

Jordan Ballin put the Chargers up 1-0 in the first after he scored from third on a wild pitch with two outs.

Champion added 3 more runs in the second all with only one hit after they took advantage of 2 Hawks errors, a walk, a ground-out RBI and an Aidan Smith single and it was 4-0.

The 4-0 lead held until the top of the fourth when Hays cut the lead in half with a couple of runs with 3 singles, a hit batter and a Charger error and it was 4-2.

Hays tied it in the top of the fifth with another pair of runs. Three singles and a double by the Hawks knotted it up at 4-4, but the Chargers responded right away to tie it.

In their very next at bat in the bottom of the sixth, Champion put the game away with 4 runs. The Chargers took advantage of 3 walks, 3 singles and a fielder’s choice to double up the Hawks, 8-4.

Champion’s Aidan Smith (24) makes a catch at first base in their series with Buda Hays last week.

The Hawks fought back and got on the board in the bottom of the fifth with a sac fly to make it 5-1. A 2-run homer in the sixth cut into the lead even more and it was 5-3 at the end of six frames, but the rally came up short.
