Eagles run rule Hill Country Christian in playoff opener

The Geneva School of Boerne baseball team bookended Tuesday’s opening round playoff game against Hill Country Christian with a couple of strong innings.

Geneva scored 5 runs in the first and closed it out with 6 runs in the bottom of the fifth to kick in the mercy rule and win the game, 11-1.

The Eagles are 19-6 and play Cypress Christian in La Grange Tuesday, 6 p.m.

Geneva has won 8 straight and had a solid start to Tuesday’s game in Boerne. They brought 11 batters to the plate in the bottom of the first frame and recorded a Jake Roberson double, 3 singles, took 3 walks, had a hit batter and an RBI fielder’s choice for the 5-0 lead before HCC could get out of the inning.

The Knights scored their only run of the contest in the top of the second to make it 5-1. It stayed that way until the bottom of the fifth when the Eagles pushed in 6 to end it.

Geneva put its first seven batters on in the inning and scored four runs before the Knights could get an out. That first out came on a Grant Roberson sac fly to make the score 10-1.

Cannon Menn, who doubled in the inning, moved to third on the Roberson sacrifice. The next Geneva batter struck out for the second put away to bring Shawn George to the plate.

On the second pitch of the George at bat, the HCC pitcher sent one into the dirt that got away from the catcher and allowed Menn to scoot home from third on the wild pitch and kick in the mercy rule.

Geneva finished with 8 hits, 8 RBI and 9 walks in the game.

Cannon Menn doubled, walked, drove in a run and scored the clinching run, Rooster Jons walked twice and scored once, Grant Roberson walked and pushed in a run, Colton Lutz singled, Shawn George singled and drove in a run, Jake Roberson doubled, was issued 2 walks, picked up an RBI and scored 2 runs, Gray Bruner doubled and singled, walked, pushed in a run and scored two times.
