Boerne Champion’s Phoenix Guerra turned in a top-10 finish at this year’s boys 5A state golf tournament held Monday and Tuesday at Legacy Hills Golf Club in Georgetown.
Guerra finished one stroke below par after the junior carded rounds of 69 and 74 to record a 143 for seventh place individually and was two strokes away from tying for third.
It’s the second straight year for Guerra to place in the top 10 after he was seventh last year as well. By finishing in the top 10, Guerra was named to the 5A all-state team.
Guerra was in fourth place after Day 1 with his 69 after the three golfers in front of him shot 66, 67 and 68.
Frisco Wakeland’s Luke Colton won the event with a 136 (66,70), Smithson Valley’s Ryan Griff came in second at 140 (67,73) and four golfers finished tied for third at 141 to all place ahead of Guerra.
Smithson Valley had a great day on the greens and had five individual golfers place in the top 11 to wrap up this year’s team title.
The Rangers won it with a 572 (278,294), Frisco Wakeland was second at 586 (289,297) and Walnut Grove earned bronze at 589 (294,295).
