THE BOOKWORM
We bid ‘Adieu’
By the time you read this, our library director, Kelly Skovbjerg, will have retired. Her last day was April 30.
The city plans to have a new director in place in the coming weeks, but in the meantime, we will continue to operate seamlessly. Our staff is a group of hard-working, creative and service-oriented people who know the importance of providing our visitors with an excellent library experience.
We will truly miss Kelly and her leadership because she has been a superb captain of this ship. All of us wish her the very best as she embarks on her next grand adventure.
Killer crafts
In May, our monthly crime-podcast program— during which attendees listen and work on their own crafts — will feature the infamous Jack the Ripper murders. If you don’t have a craft to work on, have no fear. We will provide crafts for you.
The event takes place on the second Wednesday of each month. Please join us at 6 p.m. May 8. We promise this is a fascinating program that promotes some spirited discussions among the participants.
Summer fun
We are just one month away from a summer full of fun.
Our theme is “Begin Your Adventure at the Library” and we are offering outstanding programs for all ages.
Our kickoff day is Monday, June 3, and we conclude our last summer adventure at the end of July. Some examples of adult programming include armchair adventures, special author visits, a trivia night and, of course, the annual Liars Contest.
Teens have the opportunity to come by themselves, with friends and even families to enjoy exciting movies to fit the theme. They’ll also have the chance to use their brains and imagination to emerge from escape rooms.
The little people have plenty of storytime opportunities as well as enjoying balloon art, food from around the world, and meeting sweet animals up close. All our programs will be on the web calendar, and we’ll start handing out brochures and calendars quite soon.
May: Take a break
In order for the youth department to start tracking down their adventure gear and prepare for the summer fun, they will be taking a month-long breather in May. There will be no storytimes or other regular programming. Adult discussion groups and teen programs will continue.
Magical history tour
Join us May 16 at 10 a.m. for an overview of Boerne City Park, including its history, events, and organizations such as the Agricultural Society, Cibolo Nature Center, and the Kendall County Fair Association.
We will continue the outing with a Dutch treat lunch at Longhorn Café. Any adult who loves looking to the past and learning our history is welcome to join us.
RSVP Robin at [email protected] no later than May 10. The tour begins in the parking lot at Boerne City Park, 106 City Park Road.
Anniversary celebration On Saturday, June 8 at 10 a.m., join us at the library as we observe the 180th anniversary of the Battle of Walker’s Creek. The 1844 skirmish was an unplanned confrontation in a remote area of the Hill Country between 16 Texas Rangers and dozens of Comanches.
Come learn all about the outcome of the David and Goliath-type encounter. The event is co-hosted by the Kendall County Historical Commission and the library. If you would like more information, please contact Bryden Moon at [email protected].
Happy Birthday!
The Bookshop Under the Windmill, located next to the library, is run totally by volunteers with the Friends of the Boerne Public Library. The beautiful bookstore has been open for 12 years.
All through those years, the Friends have raised money and generously helped us provide programming, books and equipment.
We are so grateful to all the hardworking men and women who have made it possible. If you want to be part of making your library the best ever, consider shopping there or donating gently used books, including children’s books, puzzles with all the pieces, CDs and movies (no audio or video cassettes, though).
Drop off your donated items at the library during business hours. The Friends sort and price the books in our location before taking them to the shop.
