Greyhounds start playoffs in series with JFK
The Boerne High baseball team had already wrapped up this year’s district title entering Friday’s regular- season finale at home against Wimberley, but the Hounds were still looking for a win because it’s always good to beat a rival.
BHS took a big lead, Wimberley caught the Hounds, but in the end, Boerne prevailed in Friday’s game, 7-6.
The Greyhounds close out the regular season with a record of 22-8. They end district play at 12-3 and open the playoffs this week with a series against Kennedy.
Game 1 is Thursday at Kennedy 7 p.m., Game 2 is Friday in Boerne, 7 p.m. and a third game, if needed, takes place Saturday at noon.
A coin flip will decide which team hosts Game 3 if it comes to that point.
In Friday’s game, Boerne scored 2 runs in the first and added another 3 runs in the second for the 5-0 lead.
In the first, Dylan Perez doubled and scored on a Jace Preston grounder. Preston later came home on a Ryan Hooper single to make it 2-0.
In the second, Hudson McNew tripled to clear the bases and bring in Grant Tamplet, Walker Hill and Preston and it was 5-0.
Jackson Grimes threw 45 pitches and left at the end of three innings. BHS coach Geoff Curtin said Grimes had a high pitch count in his previous two outings and wasn’t going to let him go long in Friday’s game since the outcome didn’t affect Boerne’s playoff standing.
Grimes only gave up 1 hit, no runs, 1 walk and struck out 5 when he left.
Thomas Puckett entered and went a third of an inning before Tanner Tuschinski took over and finished out the game.
Wimberley scored all 6 of its runs in the top of the fourth and only had one hit in the inning.
Three BHS errors, three walks and a hit batter, along with their single helped the Texans take a 6-5 lead, but the Greyhounds answered with a single run in the bottom half of the inning to tie it.
McNew came through with another big hit and started off the bottom half of the inning with a double. Hutson Hendrix reached on an error and that allowed McNew to advance to third.
Grimes stayed in the game as a batter and came through with a sac fly to center field to score McNew and it was knotted up at 6-6.
Boerne went up for good in the bottom of the fifth. With one out, Dylan Perez was hit by a pitch and moved to second on a Walker Hill ground out. Perez stole third and scored on a wild pitch to give BHS a 7-6 advantage.
The Texans didn’t score the rest of the way, although they did put runners on in the sixth and seventh frames and had a runner at second in the sixth, but didn’t score.
BHS finished with 7 hits, while the Texans had 3 base knocks.
McNew almost hit for the cycle and finished with a triple, double and a single, collected 3 RBI and scored a run.
Dylan Perez doubled and scored twice, Ryan Hooper singled, walked and pushed in a run, Grimes walked and picked up an RBI, Reese House walked and Tamplet singled and scored.
Tuschinski picked up the win since he was the pitcher of record when BHS took the final lead. He gave up 1 hit in 3.2 innings of work, no runs, walked 2 and struck out 1.
