Gobblers sweep BHS softball team in first round

Boerne High’s softball season may have come to a close Friday night at the hands of Cuero in a twogame sweep, but the Lady Greyhounds fought to the bitter end against the Lady Gobblers in Georgetown.

After Cuero took the first game, 11-5, the Lady Gobblers were up big in the second game, 11-1, and were on the verge of run ruling the Lady Hounds but Boerne made a game of it.

The Lady Greyhounds scored 9 runs in its last two at bats before succumbing to the Lady Gobblers, 12-10.

Boerne High ends the year at 15-19-1 overall and dropped its last six games of the season.

Taylor Wilson is the only senior on this year’s team that is moving up to 5A next year.

Game 1 Cuero 11, BHS 5

Boerne struck first in Game 1 and took a 3-0 lead in the second inning. Lizzy Thornton and Payton Dyal were both hit by pitches and a Brooklynn Thomason single brought in Thornton to make it 1-0.

Taylor Wilson doubled and drove in Dyal and Thomason and it was 3-0, but the Gobblers were back on top with one swing in the bottom of the inning with a grand slam for the 4-3 lead.

Boerne retook the lead in the top of the third with a couple of runs. Ava Renteria walked and Riley Partin doubled to score Renteria and tie it up at 4-4.

Partin later scored on a Thornton RBI and BHS was leading 5-4, but Cuero answered with 3 runs in the bottom of the third to jump back on top 7-5.

The Lady Gobblers added 3 more runs in the fourth and another in the fifth to get its 11 runs, while Boerne didn’t score past the third inning.

BHS finished with 5 hits, two Wilson doubles and the Partin double, while Thomason had the two other hits.

Wilson finished with 2 RBI, Renteria scored a run, Partin picked up an RBI and scored, Thornton also had an RBI and scored once and Thomason drove in a run and scored a run.

Dyal went 6 innings in the circle and gave up 10 hits, 11 earned runs, 8 walks and struck out 4.

Game 2 Cuero 11, BHS 10

Cuero had a fast start and scored four runs in the first inning. A two-run homer by the Gobblers in the first helped them get two of those runs, but BHS cut into the lead in the bottom half of the frame.

In the bottom of the first, Taylor Wilson walked and later scored on an Ava Renteria single to make it 4-1.

It stayed there until the Gobblers smashed a 3-run homer in the fourth to take a 7-1 lead.

Cuero added 4 more runs in the top of the sixth thanks two walks and a couple of doubles and it was 11-1 going into the bottom of the inning.

If Boerne didn’t score a run in their half of the inning, the game would have ended but the Lady Greyhounds fought back.

Cerissa Nasis singled and then Taylor Wilson singled with two outs to bring in Nasis. Bre Krause also reached after she was hit by a pitch.

Renteria came up and doubled and brought in Wilson and Krause and it was 11-4 to send it to the seventh and avoid the mercy rule.

Cuero added another run in the top of the seventh for the 12-4 lead.

The Lady Hounds gave it everything they had and went down swinging in the bottom half of the inning. BHS scored 6 runs and had the tying run at the plate with two outs but a pop up to first ended it.

Four singles, a Riley Partin double, a walk and an error helped Boerne score its 6 runs as they put quite the scare in Cuero.

Jesseanna Aguirre went all seven innings in the circle and yielded 9 hits, 10 earned runs, 9 walks and struck out 3.

Carly Pullin threw both games for Cuero and tossed 212 pitches on Friday as the No. 2 ranked Gobblers improved to 30-1-1. The 10 runs Boerne scored in Game 2 vs. Cuero is the most the Gobblers defense has given up this year.

Boerne finished with 13 hits against Pullin, including a double and single from Taylor Wilson, who also walked twice, drove in a run and scored three times.
