Two motorists were killed in separate incidents Monday on Interstate 10 near Comfort.
A Good Samaritan who stopped to come to the aid of victims of a two-vehicle collision was herself hit and killed by oncoming traffic.
Meanwhile, a 28-year-old San Antonio truck driver failed to negotiate a turnaround, rolled the truck and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Cynthia Garcia Marker, 46, of Phoenix, Arizona, stopped Monday at about 7:15 a.m. between mile markers 523 and 524 on eastbound I-10 after coming upon an accident involving a pickup and a tractor-trailer truck.
According to Texas Highway Patrol Sgt. Kenny Mata, foggy conditions and speed both may have played a part in the initial collision.
Garcia Marker exited her vehicle and attempted to warn approaching motorists to reduce their speed as they neared the accident scene.
An approaching 18-wheeler then veered off onto the center median to avoid the previous crash, striking the female motorist, Mata said. Garcia Marker was pronounced dead at the scene.
Shortly after that incident, another eastbound vehicle collided with the initial crash. In all, five vehicles were involved in the collision and aftermath.
EMS transported a male individual with unknown injuries to University Hospital in San Antonio. There were no indications of whether the male was injured in the initial collision, or because of successive impacts.
About 30 minutes later, Rigoberto Alejandro Rivera, 28, of San Antonio was traveling north on I-10 and exited at the FM 289 (Blaschke Road) turnaround. Rivera failed to negotiate the curve, causing both the truck tractor and trailer to roll over.
Rivera was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger was transported to University Hospital with serious injuries.
Mata said both accidents remain under investigation.
