The Geneva School of Boerne softball team defeated Schertz John Paul II Monday night and also earned a playoff spot.
Geneva defeated JP II, 7-5, and improved to 4-13 overall. They’ll open the playoffs Wednesday, May 1, on the road at Bay Area Christian, 4 p.m.
Schertz John Paul II plated 3 runs in the first inning of Monday’s game for the quick 3-0 lead but the Eagles matched those with 3 runs of their own in the second to tie it up.
Geneva scored another run in the fourth but the Guardians matched it and it was tied again, this time at 4-4.

The Eagles were consistent and scored single runs from the fourth through sixth innings and opened up a 7-4 advantage.
JP II got on the board one last time, with one run in the bottom of the sixth to make it 7-5 and that’s where it stayed after neither team scored in the seventh.
Geneva finished with 11 hits in the game and head coach Tim Millage said they won because of their determination.
“After being down 3-0 after the first inning, we answered the call and immediately tied it at 3-3 in the second. This was the key to the game,” he said. “We just refused to lose.”
Madeline Egbert picked up another win from the circle and has all four of their victories this year. Egbert struck out 12 and walked just 3 to earn the complete-game victory.
“This was an outstanding performance by our starting pitcher Madeline Egbert,” Millage said. “Twelve strikeouts is her best total over the last two seasons. She threw a high percentage of strikes while pitching out of two jams.”
Egbert helped her cause at the plate and went 2 for 3 with a double, Reese Smith was 3 for 4 with 2 RBI and Kate Friesenhahn finished 2 for 4 at the plate and drove in a run.
