Champion’s 7-0 win Tuesday night at Seguin over the Matadors baseball team moved the Chargers closer to this year’s district title.
The two met again Friday in Boerne and another Champion win over the Matadors gives the Chargers this year’s 26-5A crown.
Champion got stronger as the game progressed on Tuesday. They scored single runs in the second and third innings and then added 2 more in the fifth for the 4-0 lead.
The Chargers closed it out with 3 runs in the top of the seventh and finished the game with 6 hits, 7 stolen bases and took advantage of 4 Seguin errors.
Garland Whitehead hit 2 singles and drove in 2 runs, including a single in the first that brought in the first run of the game, while Cam Logan tripled in the seventh to bring in the first of 3 runs. Logan also picked up 2 RBI and scored once in the game.
Jordan Ballin walked, stole 2 bases and scored a run, Quinn Grable took 2 walks, also stole 2 bases and scored a run, Evan Kuhl singled, walked, stole a base and scored a run and Gage Goldberg drove in 2 runs.
Owen Kuhl singled and scored 2 runs, Aidan Smith singled, Patrick Price stole a base, while Brock Browning stole a base and scored a run.
Sawyer Smith went 6.1 innings on the bump and scattered 5 hits, gave up 2 walks and struck out 6 and picked up the shutout victory on 90 pitches.
Jacob Schwope closed out the game and faced 3 batters. Schwope walked 1 and didn’t give up a hit.
Vs. Clark
Champion also earned a non-district win Saturday vs. Clark, 11-2, behind 15 hits.
It was 2-2 after 2, but the Chargers scored 7 of their 11 runs in the fifth inning.
Jordan Ballin finished with 3 hits, 1 RBI and 1 run scored, Quinn Grable knocked out 2 hits, drove in 2 runs and scored once, Evan Kuhl hit a double, picked up 3 RBI and scored once, while Gage Goldberg had an RBI single.
Cam Logan recorded 3 singles, drove in a run and scored twice, Brock Browning knocked out 2 singles and scored 3 runs, Brody Bendele singled, walked, picked up an RBI and scored, Austin Garritano singled and drove in a run and Jacob Schwope singled.
It was pitcher by committee for the non-district game and Jackson Melanson went an inning, Garritano tossed 4 innings and picked up the win and struck out 4, while Schwope threw the final 2 frames.
