The Champion softball team didn’t get the results they were hoping for when the Chargers hosted Seguin last Friday to close out their 2024 season.
Champion wanted to go out with a win but the Lady Matadors smacked the ball around pretty good and finished with 11 hits, including 4 home runs and 2 doubles.
Camryn Rios knocked three out of the park and finished with 7 RBI in the game as the Matadors went on to run rule the Chargers, 16-6 in five innings.
Champion closes out its year at 12-13-2 overall and went 6-8 in district play for sixth place.
Only the top four teams from each district make it and 26-5A will be represented by Smithson Valley, Veterans Memorial, followed by Kerrville Tivy and Seguin. NB Canyon was fifth, followed by Champion, Pieper and Wagner.
Rios smashed her first home run in the third to give Seguin a 2-0 lead, but Madison Coker helped the Chargers take the lead in the bottom of the inning at 3-2 after she came through with a 2-RBI single.
The other Seguin player to homer in the game, Chloe Belicek, hit her 3-run shot in the fourth to make it 5-3 in favor of Seguin. Rios followed two batters later and knocked her second one out of the park for the 7-3 lead on a 2-run shot.
Champion didn’t quit and kept plugging away. The Chargers plated 3 runs in the bottom of the fourth and the lead was down to a run at 7-6, but the Matadors kept the lead and added to it in the fifth frame with 6 more runs, including the third Rios home run, another 2-run blast, and it was 13-6.
Champion didn’t score in its last two at bats and Seguin added 3 runs in the fifth to get a 10-run lead. The Chargers even walked Rios in the top of the fifth with the bases loaded to bring in a run, instead of letting her bat again.
Champion put its first runner on in the bottom of the fifth on a Mylie Parker single but Parker stayed stranded at first.
Parker finished with 2 hits, 2 RBI and a run scored, Madison Coker hit 2 singles and collected 3 RBI and Riley Murrish finished with 2 singles.
Jaycee Bendele singled, Lillian Ritchie singled, scored and picked up an RBI, Abby Brehmer singled and scored twice, Dakota Salazar singled and scored and Torin Tucker took 2 walks and scored a run.
Parker went 3.1 innings and struck out 3 batters, while Ritchie fanned 2 in 2.2 innings of work.
