The Champion softball team broke open a close game against Kerrville Tivy on Tuesday by scoring 9 runs combined in the fifth and sixth innings.
Tuesday’s contest had been tied at 1-1 but the 9 runs by Champion propelled the team to a 10-1 win.
The Chargers improved to 9-5-1 overall and 5-2 in dis trict. They close out the first round Friday at Buda Johnson and open the second round Saturday at NB Canyon.
Champion scored first on Tuesday with a single run in the third but the Lady Antlers tied it in the top of the fourth to make it 1-1.
In the bottom of the fifth, Ashley Ottmers hit a two-out double to bring in two runners and put the Chargers ahead at 3-1. Champion added two more runs in the frame to make it 5-1 and scored all four runs with two outs in the inning.
After Tivy didn’t score in the sixth, the Chargers put the game away with 5 more runs in the bottom of the inning. Champion hit three singles, along with doubles from Ottmers and Madison Hall, but the highlight of the sixth was an inside-the-park home run by Riley Murrish to make it 10-1, which is where it stayed after the Lady Antlers didn’t score in the seventh.
Champion outhit Tivy, 11-5, and didn’t commit an error.
Murrish picked up 3 RBI and scored twice to go with her homer; Ottmers finished with 3 doubles and a single, picked up 3 RBI and scored twice; Carmen Vela singled and scored; Gabi Vela singled and scored; Krista Tarver hit 2 singles and drove in 3 runs; Ava Trevino singled and scored, while Madison Hall doubled and scored 3 times.
Carmen Vela went all 7 innings and threw 128 pitches, gave up 5 hits, 1 run, fanned 16 and walked 1.
