Champion puts away Pieper in extra innings

The Champion baseball team went extra innings to defeat Pieper in a district game last Friday at home and then went on the road Saturday and beat Lehman in a non-district contest.

The Chargers defeated Pieper 5-4 in eight innings on a Gage Goldberg sac fly and then run ruled the Lobos, 16-4.

Champion is 21-6 overall and 8-2 in district. The Chargers play their series with Smithson Valley this week and were at home Tuesday and visit the Rangers Friday.

Vs. Pieper

Goldberg’s solid night at the plate started in the first frame when he singled to bring in a couple of runs. Jordan Ballin also scored from third on a wild pitch and the Chargers were winning Friday’s contest 3-1 at the end of one.

Pieper tied it with 2 runs in the top of the fourth at 3-3 but Champion answered in the bottom of the fourth and went up 4-3 after a Matthew Booth single brought in Owen Kuhl.

The lead held until the top of the sixth when the Warriors tied it with a single run at 4-4 and neither team scored in the seventh to send it to extra innings.

In the top of the eighth, Pieper was held off the board after they went 3-up and 3-down.

It went to the bottom of the eighth where Evan Kuhl singled to start the inning. Kuhl stole second and moved to third on an error.

Goldberg came up and hit the game-winning sacrifice fly to right field, allowing Kuhl to tag up from third to end it.

Pieper outhit the Chargers, 8-5, but Champion scored more runs.

Ballin walked twice and scored once, Quinn Grable walked and scored, Evan Kuhl hit 2 singles and scored 2 runs, including the game winner, Goldberg finished with a single, a sac fly and drove in 3 runs, including the game winner, Owen Kuhl plated a run and Aidan Smith singled and walked twice and Booth had an RBI single.

Booth went 7 innings on the hill and left without a decision. He gave up 8 hits, 2 earned runs, 2 walks and struck out 4.

AJ Grizzaffi tossed in the eighth and picked up the win since he was the pitcher of record when the Chargers tallied the winning run.

Grizzaffi put Pieper down in order with a flyout to centerfield, a strikeout after falling behind 3-0 on the batter, and then a ground out to Ballin at short.

Vs. Lehman

The Chargers scored in all 6 innings played against the Lobos on their way to a 16-4 win behind 14 hits.

Champion scored 5, 2, 2, 3, 1 and 3 runs, while Pieper plated 2 runs in the top of the first and added single runs in the second and third.

Andrew Harrison and Quinn Grable both homered in the game, Grable also doubled, took 2 walks, scored 2 runs and collected 4 RBI, while Harrison homered and singled, picked up 3 RBI and scored twice.

Jordan Ballin legged out a triple and singled, walked twice and scored 4 runs, Patrick Price doubled, drove in 2 runs and scored a run.

Evan Kuhl singled, pushed in a run and scored once, Gage Goldberg singled, walked twice and scored a run, Cam Logan hit 2 singles, pushed in a run and scored twice.

Aidan Smith had an RBI single, Brock Browning singled and scored and Brody Bendele singled, took 2 walks and scored 3 runs.
