Boerne Champion continues to play well and won its third straight game. Champion’s latest victim was Veterans Memorial, a team the Chargers beat on Tuesday, 13-1.
Champion improves to 8-5 overall and to 2-2 in 26-5A. They are at home Friday to host Lehman, 7 p.m.
After a 7-0 loss to Dripping Springs on March 15, the Chargers seemed to have flipped the switch. Since then, Champion has won its last three by a combined score of 37-2 and run ruled all three opponents, two of them district foes.
The Chargers had another fast start on Tuesday and scored 8 runs in the top of the first inning. They added single runs in the second and third and closed it out with 3 runs in the top of the fifth.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Patriots tried to extend the game and needed 4 runs to send it to the next inning, but only mustered a single run and the mercy rule kicked in.
The number 13 proved to be lucky for the Chargers on Tuesday after the team finished with 13 hits, 13 runs and 13 RBI.
Aiden Pickett singled and scored twice; Andrew Frei plated a run; Ryan Brandon doubled and singled, drove in a run and scored once; Josh Bowman scored once, Jordan Ballin singled, scored and drove in a run; Luke Hamilton scored a run, Connor Holtorf doubled and singled, picked up 2 RBI and scored once; Cam Logan pushed in a run, while Jacob Caraway singled, scored and drove in a run.
Rowdy Miller picked up an RBI; Jacob Gresham hit 2 singles, scored twice and collected an RBI; Nic Cortez drove in a run; Aaron Basham singled and picked up 2 RBI, Quinn Grable doubled and singled, scored once and had an RBI, while Gage Goldberg doubled, scored and drove in a run.
Cooper Marshall started on the hill and went 3 innings to get the win. He didn’t give up a hit or a run, fanned 5 and didn’t walk a batter.
Frei finished up on the mound and threw the final 2 frames. He yielded 2 hits and the run scored against him was unearned.
