Boerne High had a great softball season in 2021, going five rounds deep before they were eliminated one round shy of the state tournament.
The good news for the Lady Greyhounds is that they return most of its starters after they only lost two seniors to graduation last year.
BHS coach Chester Pettibon said one of the team’s strengths this year is the experience they have.
“There’s nothing like it, somebody that is a senior that is playing their fourth year on varsity, it makes a huge difference in their mentality and their approach to the game and their leadership,” he said. “It’s a whole different mindset they carry with them. That’s what we’re banking on this year, the experience paying off.”
The Hounds went 14-3 through non-district but the team lost a few games due to bad weather, which Pettibon said affected them a little.
“We lost six games because of the weather and that puts you behind as to where you want to be,” he said. “We’re happy with where we’re at but we still think we have a lot of room for improvement. That’s what we’re excited about, we think there is a ton of area that we can improve on as a team.”

Isa Renteria, Brooke Sivek, Cameron Cooper, Madison Dorrow, Shelby Wright Taylor Wilson, Morgan Duty, Dillen Cooper, Ashley Clingman, Reese Wilson, Jess Aguirre, Crissy Van Stavern, Ava Nieto, Ava Rodriguez, Taryn Madlock, Ava Renteria and Heidi Maytum are listed on the roster.
One thing that stands out to Pettibon about this year’s team is how well they all get along with each other.
“When you have this many personalities on a team that plays at a high level, it could very easily be where they don’t get along but this team gets along very well,” he said. “It can go the other way in a hurry when you have a lot of big personalities like we have.”
Last year’s team was defeated by Calallen in the regional finals but Pettibon said they aren’t focused on the Wildcats or any other team in the region and are just looking at the next opponent.
“We’re 0-0 going in district and we’re not focused on the past and looking at the future,” he said. “If you’re always looking ahead or behind, you’ll never enjoy the process, we try not to even look at the next district opponent until we have to play them.”
A look at the district
Included in Boerne’s district is Fredericksburg, Canyon Lake, Davenport and Bandera.
Boerne finished second last year in 28-4A and Fred won the district title after they swept the Hounds. The Battlin’ Billies have a new coach in former Greyhound Sara (Corcoran) Cammer who was part of Boerne’s 2007 state championship team.
Pettibon said the district has improved from top to bottom.
“Davenport only has 3 or 4 losses, Fredericksburg just reloaded with some young talent, Canyon Lake was young last year so they aged a year and Wimberley is the same thing,” Pettibon said. “It’s not a cut and draw easy road, there are going to be different challenges going into each game.”
