Deer softball squad splits first two district games

The Comfort softball team has played two district games and split the two 25-3A contests after the Deer held an opponent scoreless but also found themselves on the receiving end of a shutout.

The Comfort softball team has played two district games and split the two 25-3A contests after the Deer held an opponent scoreless but also found themselves on the receiving end of a shutout.

Comfort is 1-1 in district and 14-3 overall. They host Llano on Friday.

The Deer opened district last week and blanked Lago Vista, 8-0, and on Tuesday they visited Blanco and were shutout, 10-0, in five innings.

Vs. Blanco

Comfort managed 4 hits but couldn’t manufacture a run, while Blanco scored in three of four frames they batted. The Panthers had a big second inning and plated 6 runs to take control. Blanco finished with 3 home runs in the game.

Hope Van Geffen doubled for Comfort, while Madalynn Rodriguez, Layla Castro and Katie Haffner all singled for the Deer.

Emma Wardlaw took the loss after she threw 85 pitches and gave up 8 hits, 4 earned runs, struck out 5 and walked 1.

Vs. Lago Vista

Comfort beat the Lady Vikings, 8-0, last week and scored 5 of the runs in the fourth inning.

Hope Van Geffen tripled and singled, scored twice and drove in a run; Katie Haffner doubled and singled, picked up an RBI and scored twice; Ashlynn Rodriguez hit 2 singles, pushed in a run and scored 2 runs; Morgan Hansen crossed home plate once; Madalynn Rodriguez walked twice; Emma Wardlaw hit 2 singles and drove in 2 runs; Layla Castro walked and scored; Tori Hernandez singled and scored and Tilly Avalos picked up an RBI.

Wardlaw went all 7 innings and struck out 12 batters, gave up 5 hits and didn’t give up a walk or run.
