The Champion baseball team began its series with Kerrville Tivy this week and defeated the Antlers in their first meeting Tuesday, 4-1.

Champion and Kerrville met Friday to close out their series. The Chargers were 7-0 after Tuesday’s win and stand at 19-4 overall. They start a series with Pieper next week.

Champion scored single runs in the first two innings. With one out in the first, Evan Kuhl and Garland Whitehead singled and then Sam Miller singled to bring in Kuhl and it was 1-0.

In the second, Quinn Grable singled, stole second and moved to third on an Aidan Smith single. From there, Jordan Ballin grounded out but pushed in Grable from third and it was 2-0.

Tivy scratched for its only run in the fifth thanks to a single, sac bunt, another single and an error and the Charger lead was cut in half at 2-1 with only one out, but Champion didn’t allow another run the rest of the way.

The Chargers answered with a couple of insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth. Whitehead and Cam Logan singled and then Gage Goldberg followed with an RBI single to left to score Whitehead from second.

Logan later scored on a Smith ground out and the Chargers were leading 4-1.

It stayed there to the end after pitchers Sawyer Smith and AJ Grizzaffi combined to only allow one run.

Smith went 4.1 innings and picked up the win on 93 pitches. He scattered 6 hits, gave up no earned runs, 3 walks and fanned 4.

Grizzaffi picked up the save in 2.2 innings of work. He yielded 1 hit and 1 walk, no runs and sat down 6 batters.
