BOERNE — The Geneva School of Boerne Grammar School Speech Meet is an annual event as first through fifth grades choose either a piece of scripture or poetry selection and present it in competition.

Students memorize their selected piece and present in preliminary rounds to ultimately try to advance to the finals. Fifteen students in each category, scripture and poetry, advance to the Speech Meet finals and present in front of a panel of judges, their grammar school peers, teachers and parents.

Geneva places a high value on memorizing and reciting pieces to present in front of an audience at an early age.

“At Geneva, our ‘Portrait of a Graduate,’ among other aspirations is a graduate who can ‘present engagingly articulate and winsome arguments,’” Beverly Johnson, grammar school executive assistant, said. “Even in grammar school with our youngest students, we have that goal in mind as we train students to speak with confidence and boldness before others.

“Our annual Speech Meet contest is a wonderful way for students to hone these skills while engaging in healthy competition. Logic School builds on this through the oratory contest and it all culminates in Rhetoric School as each senior presents their thesis,” Johnson added.

This year, more than 200 students competed in the voluntary competition and 30 advanced to the finals. Students are awarded either a first, second or third place medal for their efforts.

Geneva School of Boerne students Branch Mangum, Solan Fikes and Hartley Lindquist are awarded third, second and first place, respectively, in the fifth grade scripture competition.
