Greyhound soccer teams both win in regional finals, advance to state tournament

CORPUS CHRISTI - Both Boerne High soccer teams won their regional championship matches Saturday in Corpus Christi to advance to this year's state tournament.

The Boerne boys held off Progreso with a 1-0 win after the Hounds scored on a Brett Hettie header on the corner kick from Shae Gonzales for the only goal of the match with eight minutes left. Progreso was down three players after they were red carded for fighting in Friday's semifinals match but they played the Greyhounds tough.

The Lady Hounds went to penalty kicks with district-foe Davenport and won in the shootout 3-2. Anna Darling hit what eventually became Boerne's game-winning PK on their fourth attempt.

Davenport was up at one point in PKs 2-1 but missed their last three. Boerne tied it on their third one and then Darling hit the go-ahead kick to make it 3-2 with one left.

The Wolves bounced their fifth try off the cross bar and BHS didn't have to kick its last one since they couldn't be caught.

Regional Semis

The Greyhound soccer teams both won their regional semifinals matches Friday in Corpus Christi and advance to Saturday's finals.

The BHS boys knocked off defending state champ Hidalgo Friday 3-2 and play Progreso Saturday at 2:30 p.m. in the regional championship match. Progreso defeated La Vernia but lost a few players after a brawl broke out in their match and won't be at full strength going into Saturday's match.

The Boerne girls eliminated Corpus Christi London 3-0 and have yet to yield a goal during the playoffs. They'll square off with district foe Davenport Saturday at noon after the Lady Wolves eliminated Calallen Friday evening.
