Greyhound soccer teams both win in regional finals, advance to state tournament

CORPUS CHRISTI - Both Boerne High soccer teams won their regional championship matches Saturday in Corpus Christi to advance to this year's state tournament.

The Boerne boys held off Progreso with a 1-0 win after the Hounds scored on a Brett Hettie header on the corner kick from Shae Gonzales for the only goal of the match with eight minutes left. Progreso was down three players after they were red carded for fighting in Friday's semifinals match but they played the Greyhounds tough.

The Lady Hounds went to penalty kicks with district-foe Davenport and won in the shootout 3-2. Anna Darling hit what eventually became Boerne's game-winning PK on their fourth attempt.

Davenport was up at one point in PKs 2-1 but missed their last three. Boerne tied it on their third one and then Darling hit the go-ahead kick to make it 3-2 with one left.

The Wolves bounced their fifth try off the cross bar and BHS didn't have to kick its last one since they couldn't be caught.
