The Champion softball team kicked off the second round of district play last Thursday just like they started the first round — with a win over Wagner.
Champion was on the road and defeated the Thunderbirds last Thursday, 11-4. They’ve completed the season sweep against Wagner after winning their first meeting, 15-5.
The Chargers are 10-9-2 overall and 4-4 in district. They hosted Veterans Memorial Tuesday and visit New Braunfels Canyon Friday.
Last Thursday’s game was close through the first four innings but the Chargers pulled away with three strong innings to close it out.
Champion was leading 3-2 through four frames but outscored the Thunderbirds in the final three innings, 8-2, to get the win.
Champion finished with 12 hits in the game compared to 6 base knocks for Wagner.
Dakota Salazar had a big game at the plate and finished with 3 hits, including a triple, double and single. Salazar drove in 3 runs and scored twice, while Mylie Parker also tripled, pushed in a run and scored once.
Abby Brehmer doubled, walked and crossed home plate twice, Torin Tucker hit 2 singles, walked once, drove in a run and scored 2 runs, and Lillian Ritchie picked up 2 RBI.
Madison Coker singled and scored twice, Alison Kory singled and collected 2 RBI, Bella Mamadaliyev and Ryleigh LaRue both singled and scored and Riley Murrish singled.
Brehmer and Ritchie both pitched in the game with Brehmer getting the win. Brehmer went 4 innings and gave up 3 hits, 1 run, 1 walk and struck out 3.
Ritchie tossed the final 3 frames and yielded 3 hits, 1 earned run and fanned 3.
