Fredericksburg came out of the gate quickly in Tuesday’s district softball game against Boerne High and scored 7 runs in the first inning on its way to a 12-2 victory.
Boerne is 3-2 in district after a win Thursday against Wimberley (11-8) to close out the first round. They are 14-13-1 overall. For more on the Wimberley win, see the Wednesday online edition of the Boerne Star.
The Lady Hounds start second round action at Bandera on Tuesday.
BHS coach Chester Pettibon said his team came out nervous in the first inning, which included a 3-run homer by the state-ranked Billies.
Pettibon said they settled down after that first frame and Boerne’s defense only allowed five more runs over the next five frames.
Fred was ahead 8-0 before Boerne got on the board in the third inning. Ava Renteria doubled and later scored to make it 8-1.
The Billies plated 2 in the fourth frame and opened up a 10-1 advantage to take it to the fifth inning.
In that fifth frame, Taylor Wilson singled and scored on a Riley Partin single and it was 10-2.
Fredericksburg answered with solo runs in the fifth and sixth frames to kick in the mercy rule. The run in the bottom of the sixth that ended it was a walk-off home run by Madison Wright.
BHS managed 5 hits off University of Central Florida commit Ava Stuewe.
Renteria and Wilson both doubled and scored once, while Wilson also singled. Partin had the RBI single and Cerissa Nasis singled.
Payton Dyal went 5.1 innings in the circle and gave up 10 hits, 3 walks and struck out 6.
