Champion’s baseball team stayed unbeaten in district play and while Tuesday’s victory over New Braunfels Canyon wasn’t a blow out like the Chargers have been accustomed to, it was still a win.
After run ruling in three of their last four games and almost run ruling in the other, the No. 3 ranked Chargers defeated the Cougars in a competitive contest, 6-1.
They closed out their series with the Cougars Thursday in New Braunfels and won, 9-2. Champion is 18-4 overall and 6-0 in district. For more on the second NB Canyon game, see the Wednesday online edition of the Boerne Star.
The Chargers only had 2 hits in Tuesday’s game, but took 9 walks, while the Cougars finished with 7 hits over 7 innings Champion did most of its damage in the second inning by scoring 4 runs.
A Gage Goldberg double brought in a run and Aidan Smith singled and drove in another run for the 2-0 lead and those were Champion’s only 2 hits of the game.
With the bases loaded, NB Canyon pitchers hit two batters — Jordan Ballin and Garland Whitehead — and the Chargers scored 2 more runs for the 4-0 lead before the Cougars could get out of the inning.
NBC plated its only run in the top of the third after starting the inning with a double. A sac bunt moved the runner to third and a ground out to shortstop scored him.
Champion answered with 2 runs in the sixth and started the frame with 3 straight walks to load the bases.
A fielder’s choice by Ballin pushed in a run and then a ground out by Evan Kuhl also drove in a run to make it 6-1 and neither team scored after that.
Sawyer Smith went all 7 innings in the circle and scattered 7 hits. He gave up a run, no walks and struck out 3 and picked up the win on 85 pitches.
Ballin drove in 2 runs, Owen Kuhl walked 3 times and Sam Miller took 2 walks and scored a run.
Cam Logan, Quinn Grable and Aidan Smith all walked once and scored once with Smith picking up an RBI.
